Hello,
I am getting an AK and I would like to put optics on it for shooting mostly out to 100 yds with occasional 200 yd shots. Looking for a tactical rather than hunting ie quick target acusition. Never bought a scope or red dot before so chime in with suggestions please....

Well, since youre asking for "tactical" it's going to cost you. Just stick with the mainstream red-dots, Aimpoint or EOtech, maybe a Trijicon reflex.
As a side note, Why do people use "tactical" in reference to hardware, not software?

i got a PKS-01 for sale for $250. Russian red dot for the special forces. very rare as only about 60 made it into the US before they were banned. Awesome scope. Mounts to optics rail and is offset to the left. Check 'em out on tantal.com and let me know.

Depending on how 'rugged' you need, these are not bad and the price is right.

If you need true tactical, Trijicon ACOG is my first choice.

I have an AK myself and i have 4 years of military/tactical training in the army so my input could be valuable to you .

1- what is your budget you get what you pay for!
2- do you want to use this AK for defense or plinking or both?


here are some suggestions if you want to save up for a Quality/Effective optics ill only give you the company name so you can decide ( except for LArue Tactical). All i need to say is : Tritium is best for Defense. Ill put a $ sign to how much it would cost the more $ the more it cost

Optics are expensive no way getting around to it . if you want a cheap , and semi ok sight go with Burris or NCstar(chinese imitation sight they do work but have crappy durability) so it depends on your budget

Looking for tactical out to 100 yds a and plinking out to 200 yds. I am not good with the iron sights on the AK so I'm looking for red dot or maybe a fixed power? One thing I like about the AR platform is you can mount a scope on top and a red dot or something else on the side for closer encounters. Can you do that with an AK?

Most newer mfgr AK's have a factory side rail for mounting optics.

The Soviets have a slew of PKS, PSO series (fixed 4X or 6X scope), PSOP and the Kobra red dot sights which will all mount right to that rail.

100-200yrds is the AK's bread and butter. I personally don't have any problems with the iron sights at those ranges on man sized targets. If you do I would suggest more practice instead of subbing optics for lack of proper shooting tech. I'm not trying to put you down or hate on you. 100-200yrds is well within any AK based weapon platform's effective range on man sized targets. It's capable of COM hits at those ranges but no AK will shoot target groups at those ranges you can brag about.

A red dot is more for fast target aquisition (CQB type stuff) - but they are capable of being used out to 200yrds.

For more "precision shooting" at those ranges you should look at one of the 4X optics (but keep in mind no AK is going to be a precision weapon at that range).
