It's Here!! Actually bow season opened Oct. 15. But for those of us who like the smell of burned powder it's tomorrow. Our season & limits here in Alabama are probably the most liberal(hate that word so make that generous) in the country. Looking forward to turning a nice fat doe into tenderloin & sausage.

Good luck! Nothing like the smell of cordite and the rattle of musketry on a frosty morning in Dixie! And good for you for doe hunting! IMHO they need to ban buck shooting of less than 5 points for a few years and allow the herds to be adjusted to reduce overpopulation. The deep south is getting to be a deer ghetto.

I'll be glad to switch to smokeless come Saturday morning. Trifocals, open sights and half dawn and I missed my first shot at 140 yards for black powder season, had to retreat to the old persimmon tree and pick one off at 75 yards in the rain.

Sparky, as a Bama boy myself, I'd like to agree, but consider: I've already taken two nice does and a great buck this season! :neener: And, there ain't nothing wrong with you using the word in its original connotation.

Sparky, did you get anything?

I was gonna go out Saturday, but got sick Friday and was miserable all weekend. Fortunately, I got better just in time for work today :(

I'll go Thanksgiving morning, though:D

Did I hear that one can take a doe and buck a day in Bama, now?

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I do have some questions for you folks down south. I've heard this for several years, but never actually heard from anyone who hunts/lives there. Is it true that you can take a deer per day during season down there? If so, how long do your seasons last? Thanks in advance.

In GA, I think current limits (per season) are 10 does and 2 buck...yup. Just checked hunting license.

With a bow, it's a buck and a deer a day from 15 Oct. to 31 Jan.

Gun season is a little different. Some areas of the state have a buck and a doe per day limit, some don't. Our state's dnr web site will do a much better job explaining it than I would.

I didn't get one Saturday. My young hunting buddy,Devin, dropped a 130 lb. doe Sat. morning & my nephew got its twin Sat. afternoon. My brother shot a doe Sunday afternoon. I, however, did not see or hear the wily Whitetail(except the one I d---n near nailed with my truck!)
That said ,hope springs eternal etc.,etc. Actually meat in the freezer is a secondary purpose in going for me. I really enjoy the peace & quiet & listening to the woods wake up at dawn &then settle down for the night at sundown. I've also really enjoyed "taking a kid hunting". Devin took his first deer, a nice 7 pointer, while hunting with me during the '01 season. He's a concientious kid & has far better gun-safety habits than most adult hunters I know.

PS
Newt In Wilcox County where we hunt it's a buck & a doe per day for the entire gun season 11/22/03 'til 01/31/04. Add the same limit for archery which opened 10/15/03 & runs 'til 01/31/04. It is theoretically possible to harvest 64 deer before gun season opens , then 4 a day combined gun & archery (146) until01/31/04. If my sorry math skills are correct that's a legal harvest (possible but not remotely probable) of210 animals. Forgot the special 3 day muzzle loader season so add 6= 216. Bama is a deer ghetto I guess.

GEEZE!!! :what:

Limit here in NW Arkansas is 2 bucks (3-point rule) and 1 doe (with permit). Also you may kill a doe with a bow. If my math skills are correct, ahem, and I think they are, that's a total of 4 deer. Wish I could hunt with you folks. Some folks have all the fun.

Lower Alabama is famous for its high deer populations. Up here, the population isn't as dense, but good nonetheless.

I've seen as many as 26 does and young bucks on a 2 acre green field at 4 in the afternoon in southern Alabama! Lots of deer!

I, however, did not see or hear the wily Whitetail(except the one I d---n near nailed with my truck!) I've seen more deer on the roadside in southern Alabama than anywhere else in I've been except for the stretch of Interstate 20 running west out of San Antonio. Gotta be careful!:uhoh:
