The G-1 is an FAL variant. No relation to the CETME or G-3. Marcus

Yeah, G1 was just the German designation for the FAL.

I have one, with the requisite number of US-made parts.

Great rifle. When/if AWB is repealed, I can snap on my "evil" flash suppressor. Have considered looking into getting a snap-on sound suppressor.

Yep, the German FAL.

But it was short-lived. It seems FN and Belgium was still a little testy over the whole "World War II thing" and the "Nazi thing" and pulled West Germany's license to produce the G1.

That prompted Germany to arm with domestic products and led HK to appropriate the Spanish CTME (which had input from German engineers and the MG42, so Germany was sort of "borrowing it back" :D ), which led to the whole roller locked line of G-3, MP5 etc.

BTW, G2 was the designation for the Swiss StGw57, which also participated in the trials the G3 won.

As Andrew said, I have understood that Germany would have been equipped with the FAL/G1 if licensing could have been worked out.
