Do you drink?

Yes this is gun related.

I was wondering if you all drink? The reasouon i ask this is because if so then you can't legally carry your firearm right? So I was wondering who is willing to put their self defense means aside for a little drink.

Nope. Not being a prude. I just don't have tolerance for booze. Make mine a frosty Sparkling Spartan Cider served with a Spartan Sandwich. That is, a tall glass of water with two slices of bread with a thick tasty slice of bread inbetween.

A very good question, and one that I wish more CCW permit-holders would think about!

Any well-trained LEO will administer a breathalyser test if he/she thinks it's appropriate after a shooting. If that test shows that the shooter is anywhere near the legal limit - even if he/she is under it - then some lawyer will jump on that fact and use it against him/her in a civil suit. If the shooter is on or over the limit, he/she is toast, no matter how justified the shooting may have been.

Basic principle: guns and alcohol don't mix...

Basic Principle: Me and alcohol Don't mix. Former Alcoholic, can not handle booze, I have been on the wagon since 1979 and looking back I am very glad I got on.

I can have as much fun with a cup of coffee, glass of tea, or a Mt Dew.

and I still respect my self in the morning, never have a hangover or throw up from drinking to much.

The reason i ask is because i am 20 and don't drink. i can count the number of drinks i have had one one hand. pretty impresive for a junior in college. and people always ask me why i don't drink. i just don't enjoy it is not a fun answer. so my answer which will become true if i ohio ever gets CCW. Is that it incapcitates me from partaking in my two most favorite activites. Shooting and driving:D

Hi everyone, my name is ¼ Bore, and I drink. [muted response] Hi QuarterBore!

I’ll have a glass of wine with dinner when at home and the CCW firearm is in the nightstand or in the safe. I had a Halloween party last month and I even got a little tipsy. But the guns are strictly off limits then. If the wife and me are out having dinner it’s water or iced tea usually. Yes, rarely I’ll have a glass of Cabernet or Shirvaz when dining out and carrying, but it’s always after food and you might as well put a nipple on that glass ‘cause I’m going to nurse it for a long time.

I won’t say (for me anyways) that it’s absolutely verboten to have a drink when carrying, but you had better damn well know your tolerances and stay within in them. And be prepared to answer some hard questions if you have to slap leather and the investigating officer smells alcohol on your breath.

Sayeth The Gospel according to Dirty Harry: “ A man’s gotta know his limitations” Wise words.

Black, it depends on state law. I'm in a state where people are responsible and this is not a problem so we have no statute against drinking and carrying. I carry in taverns when I'm out.

As for the individual, I recommend the Dirty Harry Doctrine: every man must know his limitations, and Freeman Rule #27: stay away from alcohol, stay away from trouble. Of all the police reports that I read, there is one common theme. Care to guess what that is?:D

As for me, I do, but I know my limitations. I have a beer (liquid bread where I am), I drink it slow. If with the young & nubile, it will be wine (hint to the young bachelor set: study your wines, learn the art of conversation and buy that Nora Jones album).

I rarely drink because I am usually the designated driver.
When's it gonna be my turn to be the designated drunk?
On those rare occasions when I do drink it's usually only one or two if I am out for the evening. I only drink around friends and even then I stay away from trouble.
The few times I have had a little too much to drink.. wait I never drink that much when I'm carrying.

I have actually been forced into fisticuffs and never even considered pulling steel. Of course I am one of those people that feel that drawing a weapon is more serious than sex.

Or on weekdays, weekends, or days that end with Y. Many states do not allow you to carry your gun into places where alcohol is served, even the cocktail lounge of a nice restaurant; is this correct? Even if they do, it will go a lot better for you if you drink minimally, if at all, and save the heavier stuff for when you are at home.

Like NightCrawler I've never had a drop (you're right NightCrawler, it does seem rare, I'm the only person I know who can say that).

I've just never seen any good come out of drinking, but i've seen a whole lot of bad, it's just not something I want to be a part of. And as Black92 said it would get in the way of my shooting and driving (not at the same time mind you :) )

Anyway, I've always wondered about those police departments that require thier officers to be on duty 24/7 ( and armed as well). I guess those guys can't drink at all.

Why spend good money on something that's going to make your head hurt and cause you grief?

I figure my liver needs all the help it can get anyway so I don't add any toxins to its' already taxed load.

I do have to admit I do have ONE Shiner Bock very infrequently...maybe one every 3 months...because I like it. When I do drink that one, it's in the evening, usually late, and at my home when I know I'm not going out until the next day. I'd never compromise my situational awareness by drinking in a public place and especially when I'm carrying. It's just flat irresponsible to not only myself but more imprtantly everyone within 1/4 mile of me.
I never have consumed alcohol and attempted to operate a vehicle.

Besides, that money can be better used on ammo anyway.

Yes. I love beer and wine. Drink lots of both (at home, not driving). Appear to be the only one on the planet who does so though, judging from the above posts.

By the way, I got a huge kick out of seeing that Judd lady who just got a DUI hosting CMT's 40 Greatest Drinking Songs show tonight. She began the show (obviously taped before her recent troubles) with some cute banter about why they would ever ask her to do the show ("No, it's not what you think." HHmmm. Maybe it is.) and how folks should be responsible and not drink and drive. She might add: "Or you'll end up in the clink like I was last weekend!"

Only to excess.

Sorry, but that was one of the best non-anti-war lines from the TV series "MASH."

No driving if I even suspect I'm impaired, no riding a motorcycle if I've had even a sip of beer, no handling of guns, no mowing the lawn, no working on a project of even the slightest importance.

In other words, the only thing I can do while drinking is watch the news. And, if ever there was a reason to drink, Peter Jennings embodies it.

Yep, absolutely refuse to give up beer. But of course I don't carry even if I think I might be going to a bar or having a beer or 2. If I find myself stopping at a bar for whatever reason while armed, the gun is securely locked up in my vehicle and then I don't drink. (bars have good food and iced tea)

I have considered this question many times. I have one question to those in the know: if you or friends are in desparate need of a firearm (ie being attacked with one) and you have had, say, 3 drinks within the last 1-2 hours, do you get your gun?

I ask because I assume that with anymore alcohol you would either have too slow a reaction time and become fertilizer, or lose all inhibitions about breaking the law because of being inebriated, and most importantly, being shot at.

Personally, I rarely drink to complete schloggered-ness and have had less than a case of beer since March2003. I've learned my lesson twice now: Never drink an entire pint of 100proof vodka in 45min, and never drink 3/4 of a fifth of 100yr old tequila over a period of 6 hours, sleep for 4, eat eggs and then go fishing in 15ft seas. I guarantee you that you will regret it. (yes, those were different days. Separated by almost a year.)

And besides, I learned that after no longer liking what I got sick off of before, it takes more expensive alcohol to get me drunk, as it has better flavor. For example, I cant drink most American watered-down horse urine, so I drink German, Austrailian, Engilsh, or Texan beers. That stuff is routinely $10-15 a 12-pack, and I can't drink beer fast enough to get drunk off of it. So I usually just enjoy it. However, if I make Mike's Milato(sp?)* Russian, it costs $50 for the night to get completely wasted.:scrutiny: :uhoh: $50 is a lot of ammo right there...

*If this is a racist term, please tell me. I have never heard it used in such a fashion. Someone just named the drink that, and I have accepted it as such. If you would like the recipie, please PM me as this is not a drinking forum.

carry moderation to extremes.

As a sober conservative recovering hippy,I have found alcohol
turns me into a stupid liberal (I'll puke on your couch & explain how it's your fault and you should pay for my taxi home).
Thanks to God, I have not had a drink in over 8yrs.

"if so then you can't legally carry your firearm right?" Don't think so. Don't know of any CCW states that say 'any booze, no gun'.
Such a thing as moderation. Such a thing as being responsible enough to carry a firearm, then be responsible enough NOT to drink to excess. Being responsible enough to know what your own negative reactions are to alcohol, and steer clear if necessary.

don't currently carry (a good pistol and the CHL class for myself and wife are on the "as soon as i'm working AND we can afford it" list)

i DO have a drink on occasion, ie a beer/margarita or two while wife and self are out in houston for the night (and SHE is driving).
But such nights are rare...

i got most of my drinking in between the ages of 14 and 22 (with a real purt between 20 and 22) since that time i've come to the point where "drinking to drink" or even to be social just ain't my thing.

a margarita with good mexican or similar food, Guiness or other good beer while playing darts at the Pub (too bad best place we've found for darts does NOT have a kitchen, so does not serve food) that's more my thing now.

as for carying while around booze, my understanding is that here in texas you're not SUPPOSED to carry inside anyplace that makes more than 51% of it's money from alcohol (if this is wrong i welcome correction), that sort of leaves carrying while at the pub out of the question.
even is that wasn't the case my oppinion would be let the Designated Driver be the person packing.

In the past I liked to have some wine in the safety of my own home. Now & again I would have a drink in a bar. No way would I ever drive drunk.

In warmer weather I would often be on my motorcycle so that meant no booze at all.

However....for the last 4 weeks I've been watching my carb intake (Atkins diet) & have not had a single drop. :)

I guess I'm in the camp of QBG and El T.

You can't carry in a bar here. (Its a bar if 51% of their revenue is from Liquor sales...yes its in the statutes) But I can go to a restaurant and have a beer with my enchiladas, and I often do. Just one.

I rarely have a beer at home. If friends are over we will crack open a few, but leave the guns alone.

My *exception* is my brother and brother in law. We have been known to shoot trap at the ranch while drinking ore than one or two (not getting falling down drunk , mind you) but more than might be prudent. We do have the safety valve of my wife and sister who do not drink waatching out for us and as others have said "Know your limitations" there is a time to quit; know when that is.

Quite a few us that have a good time without booze, enjoy firearms and tell old 'stories' about when we did. We don't mind if you do, just don't get upset if our soft drinks and coffee are free because we are designated to drive.

El T hits a great point, I'll add another, when I was in the main OR, guess what was often a major factor for emergency cases rushed to us from ED?

I like my freedoms , including firearms. Besides that stuff has really gone up since '84, and plastic for booze? Sorry but but that's just "wrong" IMO. Nope can buys lots of ammo, with the monies and prefer plastic in the form of shotshells and ammo boxes.

I drink, but not frequently. When I do drink, it's nowhere near the quantities that I drank when I was younger. I think my liver would revolt if I even thought about chugging a fifth of tequila without taking the bottle from my lips. In fact, I'm going out drinking tonight to celebrate two friends getting out of the Army and mourn the passing of a friend in Iraq. Of course, my guns will all be left at home and we'll have a designated driver.

rayra,

Here in TN, it is illegal to be under the influence of alcohol and in possession of a gun, licensed or not. Just ask Steve McNair of the TN Titans. He's currently in hot water for just such a situation. He was stopped this summer and found to be driving under the influence. During the stop, the officer became aware that McNair had a handgun, which he was licensed to carry, in the vehicle. McNair was arrested and charged with DUI and possession of a firearm while under he influence. AFAIK, the law doesn't give a magical number for the blood-alcohol content to be considered 'under the influence' while carrying.

We'll' I rarely drink and I'm never drunk if I do. If packing I don't touch it. If you were to be involved in any sort of altercation where you brandish your firearm or have to use it (heaven forbid), having alcohol in your system would likely work against you. Not to say that you're doomed (better judged by 12 that carried by 6), but a Grand Jury and DA that doesn't like the concept of armed civilians would certainly use it against you. Better be a very clean shoot and very good judgment if that's the case.

Haven't drank since '91 - a liver transplant showed me the error of my ways. :) Used to drink a case of beer + a day, every day. Ugh. I notice Perfessr said "Former Alcoholic" - no, we are alcoholics who don't drink.

I like this thread because just as guns and liquor don't mix, my other hobby of motorcycles and liquor don't either. It pains me to see bikes lined up at a bar, but it's also a common sight.

P95Carry
November 22, 2003, 06:10 PM
Valkman ... I agree . i am a biker dude and all too often see bikes outside of a bar .. the two do NOT mix, for me anyways. Equally with driving 4 wheels, same deal.

I do not go into bars much . but if I do it usually to eat and I can carry. Drink most likely to be a soda.

I do however LIKE a drink or three ... but my ruling is, only at home and usually not until about 9pm and after. That way I relax and am well ready to sleep come bed time. It's cheap vodka BTW so .. only costs me about $11 a week.

I do carry all my waking hours so ... at home late evening if someone where to bust in .. yeah, I would be over the limit - from driving angle. Not sure how that would go down but damned if I will not allow myself the enjoyment of a few drinks in my own home.. as against stayin ''dry'' on the highly remote offchance some slimeball is gonna bust in.

Another point of interest ..... types of drunkenness.

First example and IMO the worst ..... the guy who drinks and becomes aggressive ... dangerous, whether armed or not.

Second example is the guy who simply gets subdued, bit silly and laughs a lot .. eventually perhaps not walkin the line too straight - but - harmless. Just not so co-ordinated. Me if I over do it .... but these days that is rare.

Interestingly - I experience what I can only call the ''sober inner self'' .... it's that voice that says when functions become slightly impared ..... ''hey, you've had enough''. And it is always a voice of reason and can make normal decisions.

Knowing one's own limit is vital .....

Responsible drinking vs. CCW? I lean toward Ayoob's view: if you're drinking (never to "excess"), don't touch that gun unless it's absolutely life-saving necessary...which is precisely the reason why you've got it with you anyway (right?).

Don't drink. I have the ability to get stupid without the aid of chemicals.

Must have been born that way.

Did a little bit of a lot of things as a child, still like my beer, or a bit of wine with a good meal, some times a brandy or good whiskey by the fire. Never while packin'. Mostly enjoy at home with friends after the anchor's set/car keys put away and weapon's secured. Moderation in all things, including moderation;)

Firearms, power tools, and motor vehicles do not mix with Al Cohol.

However, when not operating any of the above, I adore my martinis.

Alcohol is not for everyone. It depends on the physical and the mental state of the imbiber. Personally I find it a pleasure most of the time. I am a writer, and my poetry and prose seems to be unleashed when I write when I drink.

But I do have to be careful not to be too creative! HA!

Yes, but moderately and only at home or at a freinds house, never in public!

And very, very rarely do I drink to get drunk!

I enjoy sipping on a short glass of Jack Daniels Single Barrel Whiskey or Gentleman Jack!

I don't drink, I had a father who was an Alcoholic. He put the family through so much pain and suffering that my brother nor I drink. Although we did love him very much. Still it gets on your nerves when they can't or won't stop.

This is a good question as I have a friend who was shooting at a local gun club and had a bit too much to drink. Although he is a great shooter he made a terrible mistake due to his condition and shot his hand. It has since healed and he no longer drinks. Good for him, I say.

As for my husband, he never liked beer or strong drink. lucky me:)

Not really, but I don't say I am a non-drinker because I have nothing against moderate alchohol. For example, our family had our thanksgiving party today and I drank a bit of wine. So I do drink, stricly, but never really drink, drink. Never get drunk that's for sure. Being drunk sucks!:barf:

I don't drink because I try to learn from other people's problems. Alcohol seems to be a contributing factor to a lot of other people's problems.

I carry because I try to learn from other people's problems. Lack of an effective method of self-defense seems to be a contributing factor to a lot of other people's problems.

Nope. The few times I have I don't normally carry. Then again it is less then half a beer or one wine cooler.

:neener:

i was thinking earlier today about how much money i've wasted on booze the last 7 years. if i had all that money back, i'd be able to buy a mp5 or two.
i rarely drink at home anymore. i've lost the desire to drink beer altogether. last couple times i've broke down and bought a sixpack, i've drank maybe two beers total and had to call a friend over so the rest wouldnt sit in my fridge for months on end.
but every couple months i do make it to the Bush Company and i drink my fair share of jack-n-cokes. never get a hang over from that, and yes, i have tried.

Used to drink recreationally, hard liquor and wine - didn't like the taste for beer.

Quit over 30 years ago, both drinking and smoking - cold turkey - (I was a heavy smoker) and now have a wine of glass with special dinners, about three times a year - tops.

REASON FOR QUITTNG: Set the proper example for my two sons. At the time, there used to be a TV ad, "Like father, like son", and that convinced me.

Besides the health advantages, quitting these habits has another great side-effect: Cheaper not to do it!

I drink quite frequently. 99% of the time it is a single shot of a good Irish whiskey like Jameson or Tullamore Dew, Guiness, Heinie, or a glass of wine with dinner. I enjoy a glass of brandy from time to time when I smoke my cigars. As with anything, moderation is key. I also pack a pipe or cut a cigar about once per week. As long as I don't abuse anything, I feel no compelling reason to stay away from it. In the social circle that I run in, it is important to feel at ease and in control around such things.

I don't drink much anymore now that we have kids...maybe once or twice a year I will drink on some special occasion, like New Year's Eve.
Before kids, when I was going to drink I would divest myself of all firearms prior to doing so. Whoever was the designated driver would also become the designated CCW-holder and be the only armed person there (most of my friends and my wife did and do have CCW permits).

I drink and have no qualms about leaving my gun at home when I do. While it's leagl to carry in bars here I just don't do it. Also don't bring guns out when at a friends house drinking and playing cards or something.

Ok, I must be in the vast minority here. I have 0-6 beers per week, usually one after dinner, but occassionally I have three on the weekend nights. I almost never drink in public, mainly because I'm too cheap. I don't visit many bars (where carry is illegal anyway) because I don't like smoke.

I have extremely good self control under 5 beers (I am 6'1" and weigh 210). If I am going to 4 or more (over the BAC limit for DUI and a very rare occasion), I retire the firearm. Under that, I just keep it in the holster. I have a rule that the only reason to ever touch my firearm (regardless of whether I'm drinking or not) is to remove it to put it in the safe or to defend your life. (Helps avoid printing, too, since I'm not constantly checking my piece)

To me, it is much like dry-firing. I use self-talk to keep me safe when drinking--"I am now retrieving the firearm from it's holster, being careful to keep my finger off the trigger and pointed in a safe direction". Similarly when dry-firing "I am now loading the gun with live ammunition. I will leave the gun in it's holster and not touch it..." Just as I can use the bathroom without soiling myself when I'm drinking, I can remember not to touch the firearm.

Yes, I realize that there are potential risks in drinking while carrying. Just as there are risks in being caught without a firearm three hours after your last beer.

To those who don't drink, go on you. I lived a whole year in a fraternity without drinking (me being the only non-drinker). In the end though, life for me is better with beer in moderation. Each of us makes his/her own choices.

The activity that I absolutely will not do after having a single beer - ride a motorcycle (especially since I never learned how ;)).

Time to go find my nomex undies... :)

When I was in the Army I intermittently consumed vast amounts of alcohol. Always off duty and far away from a gun or a steering wheel. Heck, I was rarely far from the floor. :D

Once I became a civilian I kind of lost interest in getting plowed. Every once in a while I'll have a drink or two, but I mostly stick to stuff I really like in small quantities.

Yes I do, but don't before handling or carrying firearms. It's not that guns and alcohol don't mix, it's that ammo and alcohol don't mix.

I generally have a glass of wine each day, maybe a half-glass. There have been periods of my life when I would single-handedly cause a trade imbalance with Puerto Rico due to all the rum I was consuming, but there were extenuating circumstances involved. If I'm going to get smashed, the guns get locked up first. If I'm "down" and plan to get smashed, the guns and ammo get locked up in separate geographic locations, "just in case."

If I'm going /out/ to get smashed, it's with friends, and we have a designated driver. None of my friends carry, however, so if I ever get rolled while drunk, I'll just have to hope for the best - and I only carry my ID + some cash on those occasions. ID is kept separate from the money. I tend to be a happy drunk, according to witnesses, and would probably invite the mugger to have drinks with us though he'd have to buy. :P

If I'm carrying, I generally don't drink, but have on occasion nursed a half glass of wine during the course of a two hour dinner and not felt guilty about it. (Well, the glass was full, but I only drank about half of it during the mentioned time period.)

It's been said before in this thread but it bears repeating: a man's got to know his limitations.

I love to drink. Beer, red wine and Scotch. Now, I do not like to get drunk. I don't like hangovers, I don't like feeling unsteady on my feet, I am terrified of driving under the influence and I do not need any help in making myself any stooopider than I already am. But I have lots of friends and we like to party it up, to a point. Sometimes I carry, mostly I don't. The knowledge of the power of both guns and cars keeps me straight enough.
Oh, and I do like to set off fireworks...!

Here in Indiana, as El Tejon has said, it's legal to carry into bars and to drink while carrying. Good idea? No, but legal.

Having said that, I occasionally will have a drink while out to dinner and while carrying. Note the adjective "a". I know my limits and after 32 years of being of legal age to drink, I've reached them a time or two!:D

I am a firm believer in the moderation axiom, and that includes taking this both ways. But... again, I know my limits. I have went out with the intention of drinking and I don't carry. If I'm carrying, I'm not going to drink more than the one, and that will be when I'm eating something.

YMMV, but it works for me.

I don't drink, with the occassional exception of Irish Bailey in my coffee on cold mornings -- that's it. Even then I drink it rarely because I just don't care to drink as is and it tends to give me a headache. Never do when I go out and given that I don't even drink to toast at weddings, on New Years Eve, Christmas, etc....it's never really an issue. Cappuccino is as hard as I like to go. :)

You know, I have a friend in Dallas who swore off alcohol. I thought it was strange, then I received my CCW.
I did the same damn thing.
When I am armed. NOPE, never have, never even wanted to.
Only at home, if it's in the safe and my wife is home.
She does not drink. If I'm alone at home, nope, won't do it.
I think in the last 3 years I can account for 2 Six packs of beer, out if the 12 beers, I probably finished 5. FWIW

I must admit I have had a couple of drinks. However with most of them I never got past the first sip. The only thing I can stand drinking the whole drink is a wine cooler, but even then I didn't like it that much. So I don't really drink.

I've never been drunk (or had a hangover) and don't plan to. I like being able to remember the things I've done. I do enough stupid things on my own without any help.

Carrying and drinking is thus not a worry since I prolly won't be drinking, but will be carrying.

Maybe I've skipped and skimmed the thread too quickly, but I haven't seen the term "drink" or "drinking" defined. I will carry and "drink." I will even carry after I've been "drinking." Of course for me, if I'm out, "drinking" is one or two beers. In AZ we can't take a pistol into a bar or an establishment that serves alcohol, but you better believe that I'll strap when I come out. BG's aren't gonna wait for you to relieve your system of a couple of drinks before they attack you. And that should be the primary concern--surviving the fight.
