Question about noise levels

This question is about what makes a gun loud?

I have a Mossberg 500 12ga with heavily ported barrels of the 24",28", and 24" Rifled varieties. My friend has a Remington 870 Express 20ga with barrels of the 22", and 22" Rifled variety both non-ported.

Without fail every time his Remington is extremely louder than my gun is. I honestly have had my ears ring after shooting it with poor earplugs. Also on a side note his gun has a tendency to throw a 2 foot flame (guesstimating, I didn't measure it with a ruler) that's highly visible in the dusk hours.

Now this confuses me because I always hear how porting makes your gun louder and also it seems that a 12ga (bigger gun, more boom) should inherently be louder than a 20ga. Is his gun just louder because of the powder burning outside the barrel in the air that is causing the flame? I should note to that we are using comparable loads, light target 2 3/4" Shells or 3" Waterfowl loads in both guns it doesn't matter.
