Short barrels and red dots

Is a 4" revolver inherently less accurate than a 8"? I realize that velocity is not up to par, but is it less accurate? With iron sights, I also realize that sight radius may be the problem.

Would a red dot overcome the barrel difference, notwithstanding the velocity?

As usual, any comments are appreciated.

No. In fact, it will probably be less sensitive to different ammo and changes in your grip than a longer one (not an issue with a .22LR, but a big one with a .44 Magnum). The recoil and torque of heavy loads in long barrels have a lot of effect on where the bullet hits.

Red dots don't know about sight radius, so a red dot would be an equalizer if sights are presenting a problem.

That said, I find a shorter revolver to be easier to shoot with irons than a longer one, since I don't have to try so hard to force my eyes to focus on the front sight like I do with a long one. I have a peep sight on a 10 1/2" .44 Magnum that also eliminates this probem.

To comment any more, I'd have to know what you're asking about with more detail.

No, and 4 inches isn't exactly what I'd call short. It's a common, "standard" if you will, length.

6 inches is getting out there, and 8 inches is pretty long to me and my shooting style.

You guys are confirming what I already thought. Just wanted second opinions.

I just got a Warne Maxima Weaver base for $20 unopened. When I bought my 686, I wanted an "all-rounder" and I've been toying with the idea of using it for hunting. This opened the door.

Any other thoughts?

BTW, nice vests, Ken. Very good idea. Look nice, with another reason. Like it a lot.

Would look nice with my Kangol.
