Over the summer I got into loading, and in some cases casting my own shotgun slugs. I had a lot of fun with it. I actually got surprising accuracy with Blue force handloads.

Does anyone else here like chucking big pieces of lead?

I just enjoy going to the range and practicing accuracy at 50 yards. No, I'm not all that great either. But it's fun!

I love them in my Mossberg 500 with smoothbore 24" RS barrel.
I can get great groups at 50 yards. Never tried it past that. I just love that you can focus such an immense amount of energy into a hunk of lead and send it exactly where you want it to go.

the range I use will only allow slugs...so thats all that's been through my 870 Marine Magnum....

I never see any setup for reloading slugs...how do you do it...any special gear?

vzwnnj,

I actually wrote a brief, illustrated guide on hand loading slugs. I can PM it if you want. I actually find it a little less labor intensive than reloading metallic cartridges. The only special tools needed are a roll crimper and a hull vice. A drill press does make life a little easier, but a hand drill will work.

I just got my first shotgun, a Benelli Super Nova. And I've picked up a variety of shells to try out, including some rifled slugs.

Jason, I'd love to see your reloading guide for slugs. I'm considering reloading for shotgun to see if I can get it down to .50 a shell (at least that's my goal)

Jason I'd love to see your guide as well, I just got into reloading for trap, and am chomping at the bit for the weather to warm up so I can spend a long saturday at the range, and try out several varieties of slugs I got ahold of.

slugs are great super bullets
im going to get some dixie triballs soon
the are 3 .60 caliber lead balls that weight 315gr each
they come in 3" or 3 1/2" inch
they supposedly pattern very well

I love slugs - big slow freight trains. Was looking at BPI DGS .735" 1 1/8 ounce slug for reloading. I am partial to smooth bores and Brenneke Black Magic Slugs.

The DGS don't stop for much:D

There is a 1-3/8 oz version now that I want to try, just because.

I do...

And as long as Brenneke will keep producing KOs, I'll be a happy camper.

Does these slugs have flat trajectory?

I've not tried my Super Nova yet, Jim. I joined a gun club last weekend, but got rained out before I could do anything. Rain doesn't stop me much, but until my membership goes through, I have to be accompanied by a club member...and nobody wanted to play in the rain. :)

I got the Super Nova model 20155, which is ComforTech stock Tactical with Ghost Rings. I don't care much for pistol grip shotguns unless it's a breecher gun. My fiance will be shooting this shotgun till we can afford something for her, and I figured I'd be firing some heavy rounds (for fun). So I figured the ComforTech is the best setup for us. It was a close call between the SN and the Mossberg 590A1 with Ghost Rings and speed feed stock. The ComforTech and 3.5" barrel won out over what felt like a more robust and smoother operating 590. Though I do like the safety on the 590, I'm betting through lots of use, my Super Nova will be just as smooth.

I'm also interested in trying those Dixies. I'd like to find more inexpensive ways of shooting slugs though.

I just picked up mt first dedicated slug gun at the end of last season. I practically stole it from my LGS.

The only rounds I have put through it were the Remington Buckhammers and it loves them. I'm getting 1.5" groups at 75 yards. I'm not sure whether I'll try different loads this year or stick with what I know works.
