SW 4516S Trigger Issue

I was given one of these (lightly used) as a gift several years ago and it sat in the safe. Several weeks ago, I took it to the range along with some other pistols I own.
While I expected the trigger pull in DA mode to be long and difficult, I was astonished at the trigger pull in SA mode. It was so difficult, that the first time I tried to squeeze the trigger in SA mode, I actually double checked to see if the safety is off. The pull feels like 10#... Is this normal???

No.
Something is wrong with your S&W.
The SA trigger should break light and clean with a very short reset.

Agreed with the above. If it sat in the safe for several years, as you state, without cleaning or lubrication, try that first.

Thanks, both of you for your responses ... I did clean it (bbl and chamber) before shooting it, but did not do the whole thing... Project for this evening.

You might want to take the slide off and check that the shiny silver plunger (rear of slide - twards hammer. With slide upside down, muzzle pointing to the left it is on the bottom.) moves freely when depressed and released.
Sounds like your mag safety may not be working as it should. Hope this helps! TJ
