One of my 8th grade student's essay topic for my communications class is
"What is the best long range deer rifle for Pennsylvania?".

They are supposed to pick a topic that they know nothing or little about and research to try and find an answer. I'll let you know where the facts lead him.

If you have suggestions for him I'll print out this thread in a week or so and let him use it as part of his research.

offhand, my guess is his research (aka googling "best long range deer rifle") will lead him to this thread :)

Actually, so far, his research has surprised me. Without any input from me what-so-ever he is seriously considering the 6.5x55, which happens to be my caliber of choice for the last 30 years!

But we'll see how he ends up.....(I monitor and ask questions but do not interfere)

I would suggest that he first define what "long range" is.

Then get a free copy of any ammunition manufacturer's catalog that has trajectory tables. If the rifle in question is sighted in at mid-range, and the trajectory is flat, one can shoot from close to long range without having to hold over or under to make an affective hit. Laying out trajectory factors might impress the teacher. ;)

Also what is criteria is he basing performance off of.

6.5x55, at least the kid has good taste

So Pennsylvania allows kids to write about guns in school still? Where can I sign up!?!?

For 8th grade?

I think there are laws about that sort of thing...

So you're not going to be grading this essay with a bias approach are you? :D

A couple of quick observations:

First, as Taliv noted, you will likely have just increased membership by one by making this thread. It will undoubtedly be No. 1 in your students Google search. Note: all new members that just happen to be inquiring about "the best LR hunting rifle for PA", et al will come under close scrutiny. :scrutiny:

Second, I very seriously doubt that he "[knows] nothing or little about" this subject, though I wouldn't doubt that all of the other pupils did likewise.
Third, I'll send you a PM with a little experiment that may prove interesting (other members can PM me for details, but it won't work if I mention it in the open forum). http://forums.nitroexpress.com/images/graemlins/smilies/general/mail.gif

If he were my student I would fail him if he doesn't give the answer "7mm mag". J/K:)

That’s the most important lesson I learned in school, figure out how the professor thinks and regurgitate it back to him in your own words.

^^^+10,000 to that one. Never tell the teacher the truth. You'll get an "F" for sure!

Wow, that is impressive. Either that one or the .280 or 7x57. But certainly in that category. The kid knows his stuff.

For Penn I'd say no 7mm Mag or 300 WM because from what I know of that state the hunting grounds are in the woods and "hollers" not on any broad open space, though I may be wrong about that.

My daughter teaches a 101 writing class at the local community college. For their descriptive essay an ex-Marine started out with the first half of the Riflemans Creed, then went into how to field-strip an M-16, and ended with the last half of the Creed.
She showed me his essay, he sure got my vote for an "A"!
Ya know why the first day of deer season the schools are closed in Pa? Half the class is in the woods and all the bus drivers call in sick!
A Remington pump in 270 Winchester is a favorite in Pa.

I have heard that a 760 pump is the traditional favorite long range rifle in PA. Alot of them are`sold there. Some refer to it as the Amish Autoloader. I'd go with that.

Yeah. I thought you guys in PA had to use a slug gun?

Smart kid! He knows exactly what to write to get an "A."

As opposed to me who says "Yes" when the teacher says "Well then Mr. Smarty Pants do you want to teach the class?"

The "PA deer guns" I own are my great-grandfather's M94 Winchester 30WCF circa 1913, one grandfather's M88 Win 308, and the other grandfather's M99 Savage 250-3000. All (3) have killed more deer than I have probably seen. Have to go to PA or KY to use rifles (live in Ohio), still waiting for one to walk in front of the 250. Son killed (2) in KY with the 308 last fall, less than 50 yards, shot twice in about 5 seconds, he was amazed how quick he could work the lever. He could have made the shots with a slug gun, but at least the rifles are getting use.

I don't know -- a buddy took the county prize visiting PA w/a 300 WM. Heart was completely disconnected and it took off...
