...my buddy got a great deal on a 90's vintage parkerized Springer 1911.
Now I must have a 1911.
I saw a 5" Colt 80's series marked 98% for $450...only gave it a quick lookover but seemed 95% or better.
Does that seem to be a fair price to the initiated?
Best wishes,

If it's really 98% and you like it, yep. For about $75 more, though, you could get a new-rollmark model (I'm assuming the one you saw was not). They're way better-looking than the old-rollmark ones and Colt's been making them very well.
Plus, it's a Colt.

Seems a tad high (sight unseen). You could get a new one for not too much more ;)

Well that depends on which model Series 80.
If it's a 1991A1 then you can get a new one with the new roll mark (NRM) for not much more.
If it's a MkIV Series 80 Government or Government Enhanced then it's a better deal.
I recently bough a 95% MkIV Series 80 Government Enhanced from a fellow THR member $550 and thought it was a good deal.

BluesBear, what's the difference between the 1991A1 S80 and the MkIV S80 G/GE?
I've been aching to get another Colt, but work demands it be a Series 80, more options make me happy.

It's a MK IV Series 80
I think I'm going to hold out for a Springfield Mil-Spec NIB. I thought I'd prefer more of a traditional blue finish. After shooting my buddy's 90's vintage Springer today, it's more of a smooth Matte than a rough Parkerized which I think will suit me just fine.
Additionally, the good thing about most new guns, they are generally available when you have the cash. I think in this instance, the Colt created an artificial sense of urgency. I can wait a few months, pick up a few things here and there (like mag's, snap cap's, boresnake for .45ACP, even some ammo', etc.) and pick up the Mil-Spec later in 2004.
Right now, I need to spend my money on ammo' and range time...I need the practice more than the 1911 and my buddy has assured me I will have ample opportunity to take his Springer for a spin a few times during the next few of months.
Best wishes,
