Have a person interested in trading me this AR. It appears to be a bit of a franken gun. Can you guys use your know how to let me know what exactly it is?

Here is part of the email sent with some of the technical specs

"The lower is a SGW Olympic ARMs. Polished, for some reason I don't know. I just got the Rifle about 3 weeks ago. The upper is the Key Hole symbol who also makes Colts and other Gun Co. the Barrel has not markings at all, but the Man I got it from said it was a 16" Chrome Molly, 1-9 twist."

Do you have an idea what the parts are worth/whats on it and advice based on them? Ive never seen a polished lower like that.

First thing is that the sight radius SUCKS if you are mounting both front and rear sights on the upper itself. Second, he must have scratched the hell out of the lower to strip it like that. The upper sounds pretty generic. A TON of them have that same marking on the upper as there are only a couple companies forging receivers, everyone else just puts the parts together. The sights are Midwest Industries. The rear sight runs about $100. The front sight is about $90. It looks like that front sight is actually the one made to mount on the gas block, not the receiver. If that is the case then You may not be able to zero the rifle using those irons. The gas block doesn't look like you can mount the sight to it so you may need either a new gas block or a new front sight to get on target. If the front sight is made to mount on a handguard rather than the gas block and it is the right height I would look at buying a new handguard set as well to stretch the sights further apart.

If you are looking at scoping the rifle or using a red dot then none of the sight issues matter. I would sell them if that were the case to try to get some of my money back.

It also has the larger charging lever for what thats worth.

Personally I wouldn't spend $500 on that rifle at most and even that is pushing it. You are getting a no name upper, an ugly lower, and a messed up iron sight setup. Too many question marks to come close to paying good money for it. This certainly goes in the project category.

Too many issues and an unknown history. I would offer him maybe 300 bucks for it and if he doesn't take that, walk away.

The number one rule of making a deal is always be prepared to walk away from a deal if it isn't right.

Just my .02,

From the looks of the lower receiver, it is ancient. I think the blank lower is pre 1982. The good news is that a bead blast job and moly coat will put it into something like reasonable condition, provided there are no other problems.

I would definitely not pay more than a few hundred dollars since a new can still be had for a bit over $600 if you shot around.

To me, it sounds like he bought the thing in haste without really knowing what in the world he got, and is trying to get rid of it.

I'd pass.

Wow, $150 for the sights, maybe 100 for the rest of it.

For what its worth, I dont care if it looks like crap as long as it performs and id plan on putting an optic on it eventually.

It would be my first AR. It sounds like you guys think its a bad deal?

I have an extra computer laying around that he wants to trade for. Id say computer is worth 450-550

Yes its a bad deal for $550. Too many issues. Do you think it performs because honestly looking at the shape the thing is in I have a feeling it doesn't. Putting a front sight on the upper flattop makes me question anything that has happened to this rifle. Add on the jacked up lower and things aren't looking better. I would rather buy a stripped lower and the a rifle kit or such an have about $600 into the rifle than trade for that. Even at $450 its probably too much. The only way it would be worth the price is if you sold the sights and stuck with a scope. At that I would want to see it shoot a bit before I did any trading/buying.

I wouldn't give $100 for it. It's junk. If you're looking for something that works, find something else.

Well for $100 I would probably buy it. You could part it out for more than that. But yeah I agree with the point.
