Another Mosin-Nagant Scope Mount thread...sorry

March 20, 2010, 09:55 PM
I know there are tons of Mosin-Nagant threads already, but asking again from time to time can yield new opinions, as maybe more people may have tried this.

The barrel on my Mosin-Nagant 91/30 looks flawless and shoots well, so I decided Im going to attempt a scope mount for a long distance scope.

Alright basically I have narrowed it down to two scope mounts.

this rock solid mount

This ATI mount

Anyone have any opinions on either of these?

Also the wooden stock on my Mosin-Nagant 91/30 is pretty beat up. I was thinking of replacing it with this one made by ATI.

Supposedly the ATI stock will bed (not entirely sure what that means) the rifle better, and increase accuracy. Has anyone ever used one of these? What is your opinion on it?

evil black plastic on a mosin that's so against what the gun was made for. As far as the scope mount y not just put a pu on it

I have the ATI stock on my Mosin. I like it, the Mosin dropped right in and is an ok fit, just a little gap at the rear, but given the variation among the M-N's your's may be tighter or looser.

One thing I'm not too crazy about is that the comb is too low for me when using a scope. It seems the ATI stock is designed for the iron sights. I bought a cheap-o neoprene comb riser until I figure out something better.

I like the look of the ATI stock because it means that I can save my wooden one :) It's nice to know there's other options besides NCStar or some PU knock off to choose from:cool:

Did you know that if you remove the rear sight assembly on a 91/30, there's a 3/8" male dovetail on top of the barrel that you can clamp standard 3/8" scope rings onto? I used a Leapers airgun/rimfire mount. Cost a whopping $15. There's other rings available, and most any 1" LER-type scope will work great. Don't need a bent bolt either. AFAIK, this is only on the 91/30 models.

There's two pins holding the sight base on, and they usually have a dab of solder on the base to dovetail. Gentle heating with a small torch to melt the solder, then tap the base forward and it comes right off.

Not my rifle, but same concept w/different rings.

I don't care for aluminum mounts. Aluminum was tried on the M-14 systems and we learned from it that scopes can walk.

I like using the mounts the Russians originally designed for these rifles. They mount solidly and reproductions are available ready to put modern glass in.

PU style mount and base:

The PU scope mount will need a little 'smithing to fit modern glass. Basically, cut the original rings off and attach a weaver rail. I bought a rifle with this already done, see the pic below.

PE style mount and base:

Either of these will also need a turned down bolt handle:

Thanks for the information, I'm liking the look of the PU mount with the weaver rail.

Anyone have any long range scope recommendations? Something that can handle the recoil and hold zero?

I was looking into "bedding" the gun in the stock more.

Why does a "free float" barrel shoot better than a non-free float?
