So whats the nicest Mosin Nagant stock you have ever seen?

I humbly submit my two Mosins, a 1927 91/30 Tula Dragoon Conversion and a 1944 Izzy M44. They are both all matching numbers and the M44 is counter-bored, but you would never know when you shoot it.

Of course I had to refinish them. The shiny shellac just didn't do it for me. So I stripped them, did some light sanding where it was needed and then applied several coats of Tru-oil with a buffing of 0000 steel wool between coats. I think I put about 5 coats on each one. I then buffed the final coat down to a low satin sheen.

I am really happy with them. They don't look new at all, they look used and rugged and have tons of character.

The pictures of course don't do them justice.

And Lastly, one with no flash, that shows their color and finish better.

Those are nice refurbed Soviet examples and I like them, but they really don't hold a candle to the highly figured arctic birch. One forum member here has a particular example that is breathtaking. Can't remember his name, but he has an amazing M39. IIRC he's made it a safe queen.

Second to those, I'd rank the American black walnut stocks used by some of the US manufacturers of M91's. It's tough to find those that Bubba hasn't messed up though. After that, I'd say the blond Polish M44's

But for me personally, I love the ones that are battle scarred and beaten. This old Finnish M91 stock had markings from several nations on it and appeared to have been through multiple world wars.

Here's a pair of Finnish Sako M39's. One is on an 1895 receiver and the other 1896. Gotta love the figure on that wood.

No pics, but I have seen some very nice Finnish ones, and a couple of laminate stock ones, that were pretty stunning...

I'm selling Mosins here, and they always draw an "ohhhh, thats nice" every time we crack open a box ... and they are still lousy with cosmoline. I'd be very hard pressed to pick the "nicest" one of the bunch. (20)

I just ordered another 10 ... maybe they'll be a -really- nice one in there. :D

My first 91/30 I totally stripped off all color from the outside. I used steel wool and gasoline to remove all cosmoline. Then took the front cover piece, and underneath one could see a slightly reddish hue. With the furniture guy at the hardware store, we went through stain after stain and various manufacturers until I got something that came as close as possible to that color. I then went with the oil sheen and here's the result.

At the range, I always draw attention.... once the barrel was corked, it became a 1moa shooter.

I sold this customized Mosin Nagant last year about this time for $225.

Shared Wisdom: There is no market for these rifles in custom form. Don't spend much time trying to pretty one up.

Its nice to see beautiful examples of what many people consider to be junk beater rifles.

Here's my M91/30 - 1942 Izhevsk. Restocked it with a wartime stock to match the receiver date (after a few coats of garnet shellac), turned down the bolt handle, drilled and tapped the receiver for the scope mount, inlet the stock for the mount, and spent quite a while practicing the finicky art of zeroing a PU scope.

Here's a couple photos.

Wow :what:... Vaarok wins for sure... Easily puts mine to shame. That may be the prettiest stock I have ever seen on any gun...
