I have a guy offering me an AR-10A4 with stainless steel heavy barrel, 20" I believe. It has a 2 stage NM trigger. This is a Klinton era rifle. It comes with 1 10rnd mag and is in 7.62x51.

It does not have a forward assist. This will be my 1st AR/EBR how important is the forward assist?

Flat top, no optics included. He recommends a conventional variable power scope.

He wants 1,150.00 for it.

So what do ya'all think about the price?

He also has 5 20 round Gen-1 mags he'll sell for 35 each. He did mention that AR and P-mag are now selling some mags that will interchange between this AR and an M-14. He didn't mention price on these though.

We'll before I posted this I checked prices on the armalite website. They want 1,657 for the rifle with forward assist and 35 for Gen 2 mags.

So maybe I should ask what is real world price on this rifle?

Thanks people,

The thing I CAN comment on is the forward assist. I don't use them at all. I won't push a bad round FURTHER into the chamber, I'll clear it and keep going. The only malfunction drill I ever learned with the forward-assist was the army 'SPORTS' drill, which I don't think anyone actually uses anymore.

I was hemming and hawing lately over which AR-10 to get, I decided that the DPMS/Knight pattern rifles are the most interchangeable, and Magpul has started making Pmags for them. That broke the tie for me. (Midway has them for $18.95.) I am not aware of any Pmag that will fit an Armalite pattern rifle OR an M-14. (Is this an Armalite rifle or that's just what you compared it to? The armalite is not the same.) I could be wrong, but I am not aware of any AR-10 that takes M-14 mags, the Rock River ones take FAL mags.

Does this guy really think that USED mags are worth as much as the manufacturer is selling them for NEW?

Here's the thing about mods, extras, customization, and accessories on used guns. They don't bring up the value much, if at all. On the one hand, yes, it's stuff you won't have to buy, but on the other, it's an old, used AR-10 that he doesn't want for some reason or other. The mods mean it's been tweaked which could be good OR bad. FOR ME, I would rather build my lower from scratch and get uppers from DPMS as needed and know that the errors are all mine, I'm just that kind of jerk.

For what it's really worth, I would cruise gunbroker and auctionarms to look at what they are going for. Not the BIN prices, the actual BIDS on similar used rifles that are about to close. I'll bet you a buck they will be a lot lower than this guy is asking.

(and remember that internet advice is worth what you paid for it. :)

And remember that no gun retails for MSRP. This one is new:

This page is probably more representative:

This an actual Armalite.

I agree with the mag prices. If I buy I'll try to get them for 20 each.

Thanks.

As someone who has only shopped the AR10's a little; never bought (yet), the rifle price doesn't sound really bad, but the mags, I would definitely pass. The Gen 2's are supposed to be better anyway.

The PMAGs do not fit an Armalite rifle; only DPMS/KAC/etc pattern.

but I am not aware of any AR-10 that takes M-14 mags

The first gen AR-10 mags are modified M-14 mags. They will NOT fit an M-14 once modded for the AR-10 (no more catch). Also, they don't work well.

MikeS-

That's a decent price if the rifle is in good shape. But don't waste your money on his mags; Buy gen II's from armalite, and the updated BHO catch. Armalite has a special on them in five or ten packs right now. Maybe offer him $1,100 even, citing that the updated catch is about $50.

The rifle has a lifetime warranty, and Armalite will install the BHO, but it's easy to do yourself if you feel inclined and want to avoid shipping costs.

The forward assist is used after you "press check". Just a slight tap to make sure the carrier is all the way forward.

I allways press check my rifle before every round. So I allways give a quick tap to the FA.

Thanks guys. I got it for 1100 and he threw in 4 mags. I had to buy a scope and mount. I bought a Leopuld 3x9x40. Had it laser sighted. When I shot it it was low and left at 100 yards so I got it sighted in.

I was shooting some NATO brass/berdan surplus from 1988. Had some that wouldn't ignite. Pin strikes looked good but I understand 2 things; Military ammo has some hard primers and this rifle was meant for 168grn match ammo.

I'll try some more ammo tomorrow.
