NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (AP) Workers at the Marlin Firearms Co. in Connecticut say they've been told the 140-year-old company will close next year and all 265 employees will lose their jobs.

Workers at the North Haven company say they learned about the closure plans Thursday. They told local news media layoffs will begin in May and the company will close by June 2011.

Officials at Marlin and the company's owner, Remington Arms Co. Inc. of Madison, N.C., didn't immediately return phone messages Friday morning. Remington Arms bought Marlin for nearly $42 million in 2007.

Marlin's Web site says John Marlin opened the company in 1870 in New Haven after having worked at the Colt plant in Hartford during the Civil War. The company says its lever action 22 repeater was a favorite gun of Annie Oakley.

Yeah, I don't understand either. If Remington is closing Marlin because of financial woes, boycotting them ain't gonna do much good.

They're probably just moving production to another state where their cost of doing business is less.

Marlin was in full force at the SHOT show this year, I doubt they would pay the entrance fee and pay employees, sales & marketing people to be there only to close a month or so later.

LOL. You're going to boycott Remington because Marlin can't turn a profit. I guess I get it. Sort of. Yeah, sure. That'll help Marlin.

If you have to deliberately boycott Remington, you have bigger problems, and they're in your gun safe.:D

Its my understanding that the Marlin operation is not being closed, but moved from Connecticut, where the government is high-tax and anti-gun, to another state where the manufacturing environment is more economically favorable. Ruger did much the same when they moved to Arizona.

Personally I see no reason gun manufacturers should continue to pay taxes and provide jobs in those states that are clearly opposed to the products they make. :(

So Remington owns a non-profitable buisness and decides to shut it down. OP decided to boycott Remington...why?
