I've shot the M1-M2 carbine alot. I've shot the MP5 not as much. Both are pretty handy. Does anyone know if 9mm ball ammo out of a MP5 offers any advantage over .30 cal Carbine ball ammo out of a M2?

Well, perhaps more reliable mag capacity for the MP5, as I have yet to find a flawless 30-round magazine for my M1 Carbine. Otherwise, the .30 Carbine load kicks the tar out of 9x19mm when comparing ballistics. Comparing ball ammo, the advantage of the .30 is even more pronounced. An unfair comparison might be .30 FMJ against 9mm +P+ JHP out of the same barrel length. But when JSP is used with the .30 Carbine, the edge goes to the .30.

M1 Carbine: $500.
HK MP5: $5,000.

It would have to be a very large advantage indeed.

Wouldn't it be more fair to compare an M2 Carbine to an MP5?

I would say the Carbine has the edge in effectiveness with SP and HP bullets.

The M2 on full auto is not as reliable and eats parts.
I have a big zip lock bag full of broken/worn out parts.

The M2 on semi auto is accurate past 100 yards.
I don't know about the MP5

regular ol' 9mm compared to a .30 carbine round?? almost apples and oranges. i had a site with ballistic stuff for the .30, and its basicly a hot .357. lotsa advantage over the 9mm there. as for reliabiltiy issues, i've had very few with the m1 carbine, worst of them was a bad mag and past that its been golden. hope this helps

"...flawless 30-round magazine for my M1 Carbine..." Tweak the mag lips open a tick until it feeds properly. Mine works just fine on my Plainfield. Feeds HP's no sweat.
SMG's are generally smaller and more handy than any carbine. Albeit, most of 'em are useless at more than 50 yards. Some at well under 50 yards.

110 grain .30 military ball bullet generates muzzle velocity at about 2000 fps. out of a carbine. I doubt you could get anywhere near that with 9mm.

I have shot carbines before and got dead center hits at 100 yards with iron sights. Show my an MP5 that can do that. Highest feet per second I have ever heard of for a 9mm is 1500.

Also, I wonder how an MP5 would hold up in dirty combat conditions as the Carbine experienced in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc.?

George,
Let me know where I can pick up an MP5 for 5k, I'm there.
Last I looked they were fetching 15k.
