Long ago, I remember seeing in a gun rag that someone was converting the venernable M-1 Garand to bigger and more powerful calibers, IIRC they mentioned three calibers two were .300 mag-ish and the third was .338 Winchester Mag.

Has anyone seen/owned/shot or know anything about this. The idea of a Garand in a ultra-hard hitting caliber screams "Alaskan Rifle" to me.

What Do You Think?

The only thing I've ever heard about upscaling a Garand was Tim LeGendre in Michigan who converted one to .338 Win Mag for a sherrif in a Louisiana parish. Used BAR magazines for the conversion. Word had it that it worked like a charm and was actually not as harsh a shooter as you would think.

I haven't hunted for it lately, but I've never found a website for Tim LeGendre who operated at the time under the name LeMag. He also came up with some cool .45 Win Mag and .50 DE conversions for M1 carbines.

Seems like I last saw this stuff mentioned in an article in Guns Magazine Annual a few years ago...maybe 4 years.

I would love to have a Garand chopped up to take a BAR magazine. Anybody know this Tim LeGendre and does he do good work?

The BAR magazine question came up. The gunsmith showed me how much of the Garand's receiver had to be milled away to accomodate the BAR magazine. No thanks. :(
