I just saw this excellent explanation of how to invoke your rights when dealing with the police:

I agree, this is an excellent resource. Rights are like muscles, use 'em or lose 'em.

However, do not get the notion rigidly fixed in your mind that just because you have constitutional rights the police are going to respect them. They are masters at slipp'n and slide'n around the rules to do what they want regardless.
