Bohica .50 Problems

April 4, 2010, 08:50 PM
I took my Bohica Arms Mark II out today for the 2nd time. I only had 2 rounds through it last year. I wanted to properly sight it in. I got one of the new butt stocks and cheek rest they have pictured in shotgun news. I had paid for a ACE butt pad and cheek rest almost 2 years ago, but they are not making them and this was the replacement.

So I switched from my Ace stock to the Bohica one last week and was going to get her going today.

First shot Click. After a minute pulled the round, primer strike no bang. 2nd round same thing. Tried the second round again and she fired. Third and forth round same thing strike and no ignition. Got one more to go. I was ticked by this time. I was way off on the 2 rounds i shot. I had used a laser boresighter and was shooting around 100 yards.

Since the scope needed to be moved with the new stock. I took a break and remounted the scope and bore sighted it again.

I switched ammo and first round fired no problem. But 2nd went click. At this time I was completed frustrated and it was getting dark so i called it a night.

First batch of ammo was Barrett and 2nd was American eagle. I had no problem last year with the first 2 rounds from the same lot of Barrett.

Anyone have problems with light strikes on a Bohica. I am using a DPMS lower.

Also the last round i got to go was a foot left and probably a 1.5-2 foot low. I am surprised on it being this far off after bore sighting it. I am not sure if i can adjust the scope that far. I may have jerked that shot due to being frustrated. But i wonder if my scope is toast.

If anyone has any suggestions i am open.

I would start with a heavier hammer spring. Figure the scope out after you have consistent primer ignition. You need to fire this at the same target more than a couple times before you get to troubleshooting your shots.

i think anthony's got ya on this one.

i will add, though, that boresighting a scope rarely does much more than gets you to where you can find your bullet hole... if you are still that low after you get the gun running, you'll want to shim the rear base/ring, or go to a canted base/ring set up.

you don't mention what kind of scope or rings. unless you are running a real low end scope, it would be a fluke for it to go t.u. after 2 shots, even on the 50.

It was a fustrating day at the range. I happen to found some info about needing to grind some on the hammer, due to it may be hitting bolt slighty. Sounds like i am not the only one.

Check over at on the forum, that's where most of the BOHICA guys hang out.

As was already asked, what scope are you using? Did you swap out your stock spring for the heavier one or are you using a heavier hammer?

Lastly, do you know about the KB on the BOHICA that happened last year? Last thing that I've read there hasn't been any type of recall, other 50 upper Mfgs. have recalled theirs and upgraded the bolts. You might want to call Chris and find out what's happening with that.

.50 BMG is expensive, any way to test for light strikes other than full-on rounds? Maybe primed, unloaded cases? Will that accurately demonstrate ignition performance?

I have Leupold Mark 4 extra high rings and a Burris Fullfield 2 on it. I know its the not best scope. Its the one recommend as a good starter scope by Chris.

I did read about the Bohica KB, but from what i read it was a out of battery ignition while trying to force the bolt closed with a hammer.

I cleaned the gun and was studying the hammer and bolt. I noticed the disconnector hook was catching on the side of the bolt. Seems like this could be a problem. So I filed down a little bit of side of the hook for clearance. This in no way effects the hook catching on the disconnector.

The hammer is maybe catching a little on the top of the bolt. Hopefully the hook was the problem.

Maybe I'm just a bit strange, but with something like light strikes, trigger issues and such I call my gunsmith and take the problem to him. I don't go filing on components myself, especially if I'm not sure what the issue is. It generally turns out to be cheaper in the long haul and much less stressful. Good luck to you. I hope you get your rifle running right. .50 BMG is awfully pricey to be experimenting with.

Most everything I have read about the Bohica is that many guys buy special hammers and springs for them. Your problem is not uncommon. Go to the Bohica Forum and see for yourself.

+1.....probably need a heavier spring as the above poster mentioned, as a lot of the guys
are doing it.

It takes a LOT of impact to dent a .50 BMG Primer, they are really thick.

From what was first reported the thought was that the shooter was using a hammer, now that there's been time to sort some things out it seems that it was an out of battery detonation.

Follow the link and do some reading and be careful when you're filing down certain parts of the FCG.

When you mounted the scope was it centered as far as the elevation and windage goes?

Think i may need to file down the top of the hammer too. May try some inletting black and see if i have impact on the top of the bolt. See if this cures the problem first then a new spring.

Wow 48 pages on the primal rights on the KB. read a frew pages and seems like alot of bitching and no new facts.

BOHICA? Seriously? Someone named their company after that acronym? Wow I would be reluctant to buy anything from a company with that name. But that's just me....

See that is what I was thinking too. I mean in order of magnitude it was always
lowest -- SNAFU
middle -- FUBAR
highest -- BOHICA

Do a search on the PR site for Mark Serbu and read his posts about the BOHICA upper. He's been building .50's for a long time and knows what he's talking about.

I think it would be wise for Chris to recall all of the uppers and fix the bolts, every other Mfg. has done it that uses that style of bolt. Please be careful if you plan on doing any filing and keep it to an absolute minimum.
