Well since we are in the PRK, you have a few different options.
Carbine: A good plinker. A small compact gun that is fun to shoot and I like the entire Garandesk look to it.
Bad thing is that you are going to be limited to 10 round magazines unless you can find those 15 and 30 round magazines you bought in 1985. Remember the ones that you stored somewhere in the garage. I always seem to find those magazines after heading to the nearest out of state gambling facility. Something about blackjack always helps me remember where I had them by the time I get back home.
SKS: Another handy rifle. Main benefits over the Carbine are going to be cheap ammo (probably about half the cost of Carbine ammo) and you can buy all of the 10 round stripper clips you want for cheap. Plus the 7.62x39 is a little more hefty round.
I would recommend going with a PRK legal SKS for now and at least a 1000 rounds of ammo. The only accessories you will need are about 25 stripper clips and two of the chest pouch bandoleers.
Then save your money and buy an IAI M1 Carbine later on. That is the order I did things in. The first gun I ever bought was a Russian SKS. It is till a great gun.
