Indianapolis, Nov. 24 - "I kicked their door in. I immediately told them I wasn't going to hurt anyone." From the Marion County Jail Monday, 43-year-old Eric Uhls explained why he ran from a Brownsburg Police officer early Sunday morning and ended up in a shoot out in a usually quiet neighborhood.

"Basically, I'm an addict."

A drug user for the past 27 years, Uhls' trouble with the law began in 2000. A judge convicted and sentenced him to prison for three felony drug charges. Uhls, facing three more years for parole violations, was headed to Florida when a Brownsburg officer tried to pull him over for false plates.

He fled into Marion County, crashing into a backyard off Rockville Road. He first tried to break into the Vaught's home. But Freddie Vaught says, "I seen him come up on the porch and try to open door, but locked it."

Uhls, armed with a handgun, went two doors down to the Detzel's home. Five young girls there for a birthday sleepover and Frank and Christa Detzel were inside.

Uhls thinks the people were terrified. "I'm sure they was. I had no idea there was kids in that home or I never would have kicked that door in. I was to a point where I had to go into a home to hide."

Uhls says he let Christa leave with the girls, but wanted Frank to drive him to Mexico.

When the garage door lifted, facing deputies with guns drawn Uhls fired five shots. Officers fired back. Miraculously, no one was hurt and Uhls surrendered.

"I didn't do anything yesterday I regret, except for scare people, maybe." Uhls says he doesn't regret running from police or firing the gun. "I wanted them to kill me."

Uhls says he is not suicidal, but preferred death over going back to prison.

He faces many years behind bars for his latest crime. He's held on preliminary charges of criminal confinement, burglary and attempted murder.

The family and the girls are really doing well.

Mrs. Detzel says she immediatly got the girls out of the home. They are thankful no one was hurt, but anxious to get their lives back to normal.
