Better Savage MkII Magazines?

I have a Savage MkII BTV .22 rifle that's fantastically
accurate but the factory 5-rd magazine is horribly
unreliable.

I have to be very careful when chambering a round,
looking into the receiver and usually pressing down
on the next round to align it with the breech before
closing the bolt, which I have to do slowly to insure
reliable feeding.

I was thinking of ordering a Savage factory MkII 10-rd
magazine not only in the hope it will feed better, but
also to double the capacity.

Are there after-market Savage MkII mags that are more
reliable or do I have just have to deal with what I got?:cuss:

I've been hearing slot of mag problems on the mkii lately. I have one that is about 10 yeas old with 1 fiver and 2 tens always worked flawlessly.

There seems to be a couple of problems with
the factory Savage 5-rd mag I have;

Inside width of the mag is clearly undersized,
causing the rims of the cartridges to drag along
the inside of the mag and "stovepipe" to a near
vertical position

The mag spring is too weak, exacerbating the
stovepiping problem.

And the feed lips might be a bit too wide, resulting
in the round not lining up with the chamber.

No one makes aftermarket mags for the Mark II, to my knowledge...your only choice are the factory mags.

When I first got my Mark II, it had a feeding issue with the factory 10 round mag. I bought some new mags (also 10-rounders) and they have fed flawlessly. I was relieved that it wasn't a problem with the rifle.

The good news is the 10 round mags are pretty cheap and are usually on the shelves at walmart or gander mountain.

I don't like the 10 round magazines because they get in the way. The Savage magazines that I have seem to work pretty well, but not flawlessly.
