8 mm Mauzer value?

A buddy of mine has an OLD 8mm Mauzer that his great-grandfather brought home from Germany. On the barrel, it's stamped "Danzig 1916 -- 8 mm Mauzer". Any idea how much this gun would be worth? Or how we could find out? It's in fair shape and is capable of firing, although he doesn't shoot it. He said his great grandfather saved it from a pile of weapons that were being destroyed and brought it home.
Thanks!

I mentioned it was his great-grandfather, but I forgot to mention he brought the rifle home after WWI.

If it's unaltered and in good condition it could be worth a little bit, but it would take a lot more information to nail it down. The Mauser value devil is in the details. For a start, what is the crest? The model?

It's value is not measured in dollars. If he does not understand this he should find a cousin, brother, or other descendant that does understand.

In fairness, value is ALWAYS of concern. Insurance, for example, isn't going to pay out much money unless a high value can be clearly established.

To clarify, I was the one wondering what the value would be. I know he would NEVER part with it. I think he should make sure he takes lots of photos and then store it in the safe until he dies and passes it down to his great-grandkids.

It's difficult to "value" such a thing in dollars without knowing the condition, and even then the dollar value is determined by what someone will pay. One thing that would add to it's value (if it is a "bring home") is the fact that there are no import markings. I assume it's a G98 given the year of manufacture. I haven't seen these for sale anywhere in original German configuration. Your friend may have a rarity.
Cosmoline, crest marking for Danzig should be a crown.

If it's in good condition, at least $100.00.

I would suggest inquiring on one of the boards that deals in C&R and milsurp type firearms. They will have a better idea of what the current market value is for one of those.
Here's one I know about:
