Before you go spending any money on rifles butchered by Gibbs, please read my post in this thread. (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44991&highlight=Gibbs+junk)

So tell me about these carbines guys. I have had the nostalgic urge in the past to pick up a bolt action WWII rifle. Everything I own is semi-auto, so I just can never bring myself to buy something manually operated. I am sure I am missing out on some fun, though. Do they shoot accurately? Are they reliable? How much are mags and ammo? What do they kick like?

WG&A has them. http://www.gunsnammo.com/index_files/riflesmain2.htm

I got one from SOG this past summer and it's in pretty poor shape.

Thx DMK ... yeah I'm never too sure just what will arrive from SOG .. tho they are not bad on some stuff. Main thing with Guns and ammo (I spoke with a guy there) ..... the bores are good .. guns covered in crud and need cleaned a lot but underneath . not too bad at all. may go for that. Do they shoot accurately? Are they reliable? How much are mags and ammo? What do they kick like? Grayrider ...... I am looking to replace one I had way back ....... mine then in fact shot very acceptably .. I liked the peep sight .. and with milsurp ammo usually reckoned on a 4" group at 100 .. which was OK by me.

They are somewhat ''punishing'' .. being altogether lighter and the butt is not over comfortable .. however ... addition of a recoil pad helps and - they are enormous fun to shoot. I have loads of ammo ... both milsurp corrosive and also have some FNM on the way ....... I think you'd enjoy one.

SOG is definitely a crapshoot. But on the other hand, there was a guy on the Enfield boards recently that was happy as a clam with his.

The price is certainly ok.

Thinking about going for one of their wirewrapped SMLE/1907 bayonet combos....don't tell the wife! :D ;)

The fabled "wandering zero" was fixed simply by tightening the kingscrew that attached the forestock to the action, and keeping the barrel channel clear of interfering with the barrel. As much as these little guys kick, I can see where the wood's attachment could potentially loosen up.

I bought 1945 BSA No5Mk1 through SOG a few years ago, and it was permanently preserved in a thick layer of varnish, having survived service in Malaysia over the years. Steel wool, linseed oil, and here's what it looks like:

BTW, in case it hasn't been said enough already, GIBBS = CRAP!

(I've seen their "tanker" Enfields launch their nosecaps and forends downrange, they didn't use strong enough wood glue to keep them together. Val Forgett has a lot of work to do if he wants to earn back any credibility in my book.)

I've seen a Gibbs up close and it was clearly cut, sloppily re-assembled, and tool marked from crude machining. That was enough to make me pass on one.

Again, thx all for the heads up .. it seems more than justified about the Gibb's standards (or lack of em) .... glad to know about it.
