WASHINGTON - Background checks on gun buyers would be retained for just 24 hours, instead of the current 90 days, under a deal Republicans struck during final negotiations over an immense spending bill funding dozens of federal agencies.

24 hours? Don't goverment agencies back up their computers nightly? Or am I just being picky?

There was quite a stink when Klinton/Reno wanted to maintain the records for over 18 months for "quality control" purposes. Ashcroft nixed that program real quick. Now we have the lawmakers putting it back the way it was supposed to be in the first place: approve and dump data.

It sounds great, but I'm always skeptical.
It's just too damned easy for some zealous bureacrat to tap copies of the files into a disk somewhere "Just in case".
The only absolutely positive way to be sure that lists of gunowners is not compiled and preserved is not to compile them in the first place.

This is better than nothing. If some intrepid reporter could find some agent maintaining an illegal list of gun buyers we could have a field day.

Since when has it ever bothered the feds if the law got in the way of what they wanted to do. The BATF has been computerizing old 4473s for years despite laws specifically forbidding them to do so. It's public knowledge, but what's ever been done to make them stop?
