I did the search engine and just got tired of reading so please bare with me or ignore my thread and don't read it. I bought Crimson Trace Laser grips for my wife's 642, and according to the Manual it states that we must put this "Warning Stickers" about the laser on the gun. Is it mandatory or just an umbrella for the company to protect themselves from prosecution? I live in Texas.

When you buy a new mattress it says it is illegal to remove this label by penalty of law. Did you ever here of anyone getting prosecuted for taking it off.
I would think its your pistol and your right not to put it on. Save the label and if you sell the pistol give it to the new owner.

The gun's barrel is enough warning. If you're pointing a gun at them, they have more things to worry about than being blinded by a laser.

IMHO/IANAL, those stickers are a CYA for the manufacturer, courtesy of their legal department. Any time you mention "gun", you get liability problems....

IMHO, too, the sticker is really more for your own protection. The BG is not likely to be close enough to be endangered by the laser, compared to his/her risk from the gun. But you may be tempted to look at it.... Don't....

I know it says it's safe, but so was Thalidomide, and, for that matter, tobacco....

Besides, if you put the sticker on the gun, odds are you will regularly apply Hoppe's and....

Just CYA for product liability lawsuits, kind of like the label warning not to overload my TV stand. Common sense should tell you that you shouldn't shine a laser into someone's - or your own - eyes, but someone is certain to do it. :rolleyes:

I doubt that the bad guy is going to take time to read the warning stickers on your gun while it's pointed at him...My handgun came with Crimson Trace installed and two stickers. I read them and promptly removed them...

I wouldn't worry about it. I also wouldn't fire the laser and joke about shooting down any low-flying jets or police helicopters - the government gets so excited over that :)

Thanks for the laughs guys. One quick note, never new my wife was left eye dominant and she is right handed, until I saw her aim the laser,this will help her train the right eye.

Not sure you can (or want to) train her to use her right eye. It might work while in the controlled confines of a range, but in a SD situation, she is going to naturally use her dominant eye. Don't fight it, train for it.

She can shoot a handgun right handed with her left eye, That's what I do. You just hold the gun over to the left, works fine.

That worked for me until I hit 50 and got lineless bifocals ("progressive lenses"). They make me shoot low/left shooting right-handed while sighting with the left eye. I learned to sight a pistol with my right eye, and the problem went away.

I used to work in a shop that used distilled water, and it had warning labels and a Material Safety Data Sheet !.

IMHO, you need an MSDS for practically anything anymore....

The former day job used to get $40K worth of materials in with a one-page spec sheet and ten pages of MSDS that told us that it caused Laboratory Rats in Cancer or some such if parked outside in the sun for a month....

Kinda like the stuffer in medicine packages - if a Lab animal walked by the stuff and stubbed a toe, it had to be there.... I once actually read one of those before taking something new. Almost tossed the package....

Actually it says its illegal for a retailer to remove the label, but that it can be removed by the end user.

Actually yes, I do recall reading about someone being prosecuted for taking it off ... it was a furniture store that was removing those labels and selling the mattresses as American made (or better quality or something like that).

As for the sticker, the law requires retailers that sell laser products to make sure there are warning stickers on the products ... again the end user may remove them without fear of legal trouble.

Lasers are required to have those warnings, courtesy of the Food and Drug Administration, who for whatever reason regulates lasers. Their Center for Devices and Radiological Health department has classifications for different types of lasers and those stickers are required by Federal law.

Most have some variation of this icon, then a statement about the possible dangers of that type of laser. Some are required to have the Class and power output as well.

Reminds me of the time I got hornswaggled into installing a Dental X-Ray machine for my dad, some 30 years ago....

I had to register with the FDA, which involved a form not too different from the 4473.

No questions about education, qualification, etc., or Felonies, either :)....

When the manufacturer vanished during a second round of repairs, the FDA's response was "yeah, we're looking for them, too...."

(The unit was sealed, more or less. About all I had to do was verify that the timer was reliable. And hang the thing on the wall.)
