Well approximately an hour ago I was in a local gunshop - just killin my meal break. The dealer had just purchased a revolver collection - mostly S&W pieces. He had several pieces with the boxes. One of them was a 4" Model 27-2 for $500.00. I called my wife (the boss) and explained to her the situation. Actually I begged and pleaded and promised I wouldn't get another gun for at least two years (well my fingers were crossed). She let me pull out the plastic with this parting expression: "I hope you're worth it. Merry Christmas" We've been together for fifteen years and shehasn't kicked me out yet.

So I am now the proud owner of a like new Model 27 with the box. I asked the dealer why he was selling this model for a fairly reasonable price. He said that nobody want's revolvers anymore. Which is why the display case with the six shooters is in the back and all the autos are in the front.

Now my dillema is to shoot or not to shoot. You guys have made me an addict for the big old N frame .357's. Thanks guys.

There have been some folks talking about prices between six and seven hundred. Your right, it is only money (don't let my wife hear hear that) and I don't know when I'm going to find another M27. Having said that I'll probably find dozens now for less then $450.00.

You say it is like new in the box - - Can you tell if it has been fired at all? If it has, then, in my mind, the "To shoot or not to shoot" question would be answered: YES, shoot and enjoy.

I say this because I have a few "Safe Queen," unfired guns, and all I'm getting out of them is the knowledge that they will bring a lot more at sale than if they had been shot. But, I am a SHOOTER, not a collector or dealer, so, essentially, I just have good money tied up.

Speaking of model 27s, I was fortunate to locate a PRE-model 27 last February, in excellent condition - - I can't argue if it is in 95 or 97 per cent - - Doesn't matter. Truly, I'd almost prefer it to be somewhere in the 80 to 85% range, because it is really too nice to carry around in a holster now - - I have other .357s which aren't as pretty, and serve as well. But I still shoot it! Lotsa fun, too.

Great find! The 4 inch pinned and recessed 27's are not easy to come buy. You have a great revolver in a very desirable barrel length. I'd have bought it in a heartbeat!

If it were mine I probably wouldn't shoot it unless I knew it had already been shot.

I was out today shooting my pre-27 357 mag. Ran like a champ, but I was not shooting so hot. After about 400 rnds the magnas grips and I were not getting along so good.

The pre-27's are sure a great breed!

Are you sure its a 4 inch my 27-2 is a 3 1/2. I thought they only came in 3 1/2, 5, 8 3/8 back then. I do know they latter standardized on 4 and 6 inch.

My 27-2 3 1/2 inch is very accurate. But in truth my L and k frames have much better triggers. Shooting magnums in this gun is like shooting 38s in other guns. and even though the finish isn't what it used to be, this is still one tough looking gun.

My 27-2 is a 4 inch, walked into the local gunshop saw it sitting there for 450 and asked to see it. I handled it, saw out absolutely tight it's lock up was(tightest of any S&W I've handled) and I bought it right there on the spot.

Gun is in great condition. Strange, all my N-frame magnums are 4 inch variants while my non-mags are 6 1/2 inch barreled guns. I gotta diversify.

The 3 1/2 & 5" 27s were first. The other lengths came later on.

Hello. I'd suggest shooting it. I have but one M27, a 3 1/2", after foolishly letting a 5" get away. You won't regret it.

The model 27 was made to be shot, not looked at. It'll last any number of lifetimes if handled and cleaned with reasonably good care.

There's a 3" on consignment at my local 'store; the owner has a rep for WAITING for his price. As long as a year. This one looks nearly unfired, and comes with box, etc., but it may be there awhile - he's looking for $650!!!!:what:

I got a 27-2 blue 83/8" bbl for $400. It was drilled /tapped & came with a 2X leupold scope on it. There was just the tiniest hint of wear on it 90%+.
Its also a s prefix. It sure a fun shooter.

I think the 27s are a must have for any collection.

See my thread in Handguns: General Discussions titled "The Beren Collection." In the pic you'll find my newly aquired S&W Mod. 27-2, blued, P&R'd, with a 5" barrel. Cost me about $450, no box. Wonderful condition.

I took it right out and shot a box of 38 Sp loads through her after making sure she was healthy. She was. Locks up tight and the action is smooth as silk. 38 Spl loads feel like 22's. Now I need to add a 28 that I won't feel bad about if I drop it. ;)

The 27 has recessed chambers and a pinned barrel. It was shot some, but not very much. Today while the turkey was cooking my brother-in-law and I went out to the range (I have access to the keys) and we put about 100 +P rounds and 26 .357 158 grain JSP through it. Very nice. Shoots like a dream and it is very tight. I replaced the factory grips with some old Herrets which helped alot. Now I have a 4" M27 and a 6" M28. Over dinner the two of us began talking about the other barrel lengths and how it would be fun to have the 8 3/8 model. It was a fun conversation until I saw my wife looking at me over the dressing. Maybe I'll lay low for awhile and just buy ammo.:cool:
