.454 ammo comparison ... ''sublime'' vs ''ridiculous''!

Got to range this afternoon ... set up scope on M77 .223 ... sweet lil rifle. Checked out SAR1 with new red dot .. got that set up .... (fun!! !). Also adjusted my CT grips on SP-101 ... fiddly but successful. Well pleased.

Anyways ... wanted set up ''Raging Lunatic'' with my Hornady ammo .... having previously used just the Winchester..... thinking this will come with me hunting perhaps, instead of .44 mag SRH.

But hey ..... the difference!!!! The Winchester load is with the JHP 250 grainer ..... listed as 1300 fps and 938 ft lbs. I thought when I shot some how ''whimpy'' it felt .. accuracy was well OK but, hardly felt more than a ''decent'' .44 mag load.

The Hornady tho .. oh my!! ''Ridiculous'' is not the word to use of course ''Impressive'' is more suitable!:p This is the 300 grn XTP - listed as having MV of 1650 and energy at 1813 ft lbs!! Near double the energy! Now that DOES yield some well noticeable recoil :D. I went thru a box of 20 getting sights sorted out .. and found in fact I was hard pressed to get scope set down enough ... shots were wanting to still be a shade high at 50 yds. My hand and wrist felt at end that 20 rnds was ..... well ...... ''enough''!! Mind you the grips were excellent.

However .. this will suit nicely for the 50 -75 yd range spread for hunting .... all I will consider shooting next week if a decent whitetail presents. Much longer range and I may well leave it.

All in all .... amazed at such a huge diversity of load ... in same cal. Once my empty case count gets higher - it'll be reload time ..... cos this stuff is way too pricey to buy as factory. I'd love to know what powder Hornady uses ... any ideas anyone?

All I know is the "real" .454 Casull loads kick about twice as hard as "real" 44 Magnum loads. :) You can keep the Casull. 44 Maggie is enough for me! :uhoh:

What BigG said. If I want close to .454 energy levels, I'll just use some Garrett Hammerheads which push the envelope of .44 mag. For most applications, standard .44 mag. ammo is plenty powerful for me.

Besides, you can't get a .454 Casull in one of these, but you can get it in Foty Fo Mag. ;)

Go to www.freedomarms.com/loading.html. This will give you a lot of loading and ballistic data for the 454. From mild to wild. I've tried some of their offerings for target and hunting purposes.

Hello,
I'd check and double check with Taurus about using full power Freeom Arms loads or ammo in the Taurus. The Freedom Arms is a far stronger platform and can safely contain much warmer loads that can and have damaged the Raging Bull.

Thx for the reminder ...... I realize the Freedom's is one tough piece ... and will not push my luck in the Taurus.

Hello again!
For purely historical information regarding Mr. Casulls cartridge you may find online the old Triplex (yeppers, three different handgun powders compressed under a 300gn or 400gn bullet!) formulas along with ballistics and pressures in the 80,000cup range.
Nowdays H-110/WW296 are used to drive 420gn LBT cast bullets well over 1550fps from the short 4.75in barrels (Owwww!)
PS, if perchance you come across some of the old blue box Freedom Arms ammo my obvious suggestion is do not fire it in the Taurus!
