I have an Ithaca 87 M&P with plain beaded barrel. The threaded "stalk" of the bead projects into the bore about 1/32". Should this projection be filed flush? What a safe way to make it flush without affecting the bore...it is in the choke area...

If I were to replace the bead with a set of rifle sights, how is the threaded hole "filled in"?

That can't stick in the bore or it will get bent over and you will not get it out. Take a dremel and grind it down close to flush and then take it out and cut one more thread off. Put it back in with blue Loctite if you might want to change it otherwise red is the way to go.

If you change sights that little bitty hole is not going to bother anyone. I would leave the bead in if possible otherwise I would forget the hole is there.

Thanks HSmith, is it normal practice to A) tap all the way through barrel metal into the bore, and B) leave the threaded stalk to protrude into the bore?

BTW this SG hasn't seen much action but it's no virgin...hope I'm still in time to unscrew that bead out of there

Just one note...

It is normal to drill through for shotgun beads at the end of the barrel, but not anywhere else on the barrel. It is especially dangerous to drill through (or too deep) anywhere within the chamber and forcing cone area.

Personally I would pull the sight to shorten it. I do not like the idea of using anything that is abrasive in the choke area of a barrel unless it is used concentrically. Also, when the sight is out you should make sure there is no flash sticking down into the barrel.

Thanks for the tip, I think that's how I'll do it. Seems like QC went pretty much by the wayside in the interim days of Ithaca Acquisition Corp.
