Cops: 1 killed during DeKalb home invasionShareThisPrint E-mail .By Alexis Stevens
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Despite learning a neighbor killed one home invasion suspect and wounded another, a woman in one DeKalb County neighborhood says she still feels safe. "I've got my doors locked and my alarm," said Norma Baskerville, who runs a daycare out of her home.
Baskerville said she may have seen the two suspects Wednesday morning, hours before they allegedly tried to break in to a nearby home in the 2100 block of Eagles Nest Circle, about a half-mile south of Covington Highway on South Hairston Road.
Police have not identified the DeKalb homeowner who shot two men that entered his home after kicking in his front door Wednesday afternoon.
One of the intruders was transported to Grady Hospital, where he later died, according to Mekka Parish, police spokeswoman. He died shortly before 5 p.m., police said. His name has not yet been released.
The other man fled the scene, but later arrived at Grady for treatment of a gunshot wound, Parish said. His condition is unknown.
DeKalb police interviewed the homeowner and a female who was also in the home at the time of the incident. No charges have been filed.
"They’re unsure if this was random or if this home was targeted," Parish told the AJC.
Wednesday's incident was the second on the street in about a year, Baskerville said.
"Another home was broken into about this time last year, about two houses away from me," she said.
Baskerville said she doesn't know the man who shot the suspects.
"He was ready," said Baskerville of her neighbor

^ Seems like the author is trying to tie the sence of danger to the home owner, not the home invasion.....but the neighbor doesn't take the bate.
A little logicwould make the news paper writer realize that the neighbors would feel safer with the criminals caught / dead, than at large. Not that another group of criminals couldnt be out there, but tonight there are 2 off the streets.
Pretty brazen kicking in the front door.

Another story was on the news today and I think it was dekalb also or maybe clayton county. Two wonderful counties near atlanta. Older lady maybe 70s has her door kicked in the middle of the day. Shes sitting on the couch with what looked like a ruger single six 22 next to her so she just started shooting towards the door and the guy ran off. You just have to own a personal defense weapon and have it ready at all times. Wish she had hit the guy.

As mentioned before, seems like they were trying to get her to say she doesn't feel safe, and then tie that feeling of insecurity to the fact that someone in her neighborhood owns a gun. She shot that down, though...
"He was ready," said Baskerville of her neighbor.

The lady should feel a little safer now. Word on the street is that her neighborhood is not a good neighborhood to attempt home invasions.

I frequently wear my concealed carry piece around the house, as well as have multiple other firearms hidden in various locations to draw on. This house, when occupied, would not be a good location to break into, particularly considering there are only a couple viable entry points.

I carry a handgun at ALL times when I'm at home. The only time I do not have a gun on me IN MY HOME is when I am taking a shower, at which time my handgun is in a drawer in the bathroom about 1/2-1 step away. It's legal and I'm going to do it. Go ahead, start jumping up and down about how I'm a nut :)

Is there something wrong with having a gun handy to repel home invaders?

I generally carry my CCW piece around the house. So should this happen around my home, well I should be able to get some shots off quick. The "good" thing is the layout of my home, if I am firing towards the front of the house (as would be likely if I was firing at someone coming in the front or side door), the way the houses are laid out in front (I am at the top of the hill, they are generally all 50' lower than my home) it is unlikely I would hit them with any rounds that missed the target.
These guys did a good job. I am sure they are not happy that they had to kill someone, but sounds like the criminals gave them no choice in the matter.

Sounds like a reasonable idea to me....many people do just that. Or, if not on their person, they at least have one handy.
Home invaders usually do not knock politely, then give you time to go to another room, open the safe, select your favorite HD gun and load it. ;)

I don't carry a gun on my person while at home, but there are more than a couple in strategic locations, loaded and ready to go. No matter where you are in the house, you're not far from a loaded firearm.
It's much better to be prepared and never need to use them, than something to happen and become a statistic.

I see this as a wake-up call because lately my carry has been drifting away from my immediate vicinity while at home. Complacency can get you killed, or at the very least seriously injured.

I certainly respect the views of all the contributers. But sometimes I get to a point where if I have to carry a gun in all the rooms of my own house to feel safe I'm to a point where frankly I just don't give a damn any more. Is this what we have become?
Personally, I have two good dogs, big dogs. They're alert and smart. I'm hoping they give me a few seconds so I can get to where I can defend myself. Weapons are set up at different stations around the house. I live alone, out in the country.
Its just hard to accept that we have a society that has come to this point. I realize we have. But I just shake my head sometimes.

^ Starship1st - I hate those commercials. I want someone maybe a firearms or ammo company to do a spoof. In the spoof the bad guy kicks in the door, doesnt care about the "Voice" and BANG.......
Really, those commercials to me are a good example of what an alarm can not do, which is protect you. They may deter a common thief, but in one of the commercials the ex-boyfriend was there after the date dropped her off. I seriously doubt the "Voice" is stopping that guy in real life. I wonder if someone will sue if / when they find out that all the alarm does is call for help, which can be useful, but is certainly not necessarily the end of the situation depending on the mindset of the bad guy/s.

Excellent observation. Some here will tell you that they carry a sidearm at all times in their home. I pity people like that. A man's home is his castle. If you aren't safe in your own home, you better move.
That said, I've got all manner of weapons in every room of the house - swords, knives, staves, spears, sais, nunchaku, jutte, throwing weapons, and so forth. In an emergency, I won't be rushing for the guns, but grabbing the best tool at hand and fighting my way toward the guns. Positioned and stored properly, a visitor would not notice how these items are placed. The occupants of the home are familiar and trained with their use.

Really I would be fine if the victims in the commercial did anything more than cower in fear in the master bedroom until the police arrive.
I think at the very least it should go like this:
Commercial starts with woman and daughter watching TV on the couch
Flash to front door, guy smashes a window out and unlocks the door, steps inside and alarm starts to go off, he hears and looks around with panic on face.
Flash to tV room, mom and daughter hear alarm, run upstars into master bedroom, lock door. Mom grabs a baseball bat and picks up the phone to tell alarm company what happened.
Alarm company gets to sell its systems while not suggesting such a false sense of security.

Not to belabor the point, but could do an entire series of serious commercials just like that,
Highway Rest stops, logging roads, car break downs, garages, alleys.
Cheap to produce, only need the one live actor, no violence against a person shown, just an approach of an "unknown" and the product placement.
Just need a company that can bull through and get it on air during prime time, and survive the scrutiny.

You Gotta Love A Good Home Defense System
Homeowner shoots and kills would be armed robbery suspect and wounds the dead guy's partner. You gotta love it. One thing for sure, the dead guy won't try that again!
The perfect home defense system.

Another LEO comment:
He did a BURGLARY April 12 2004 and was allowed to plead guilty to Theft By Taking!
He did a BURGLARY on June 2 2005. Again, the BURGLARY was dropped and he pleaded guilty to Theft By Taking and Obstruction of Officers.
Both cases were closed out the same day. Judge Seeliger sentenced him to 3 years, six months to serve in custody, REDUCED TO TIME SERVED for one case, and 6 months to serve in custody for the other case, REDUCED TO TIME SERVED, both running CONCURRENTLY! As a repeat offender, he plead guilty and got to go home that day!
He got a slap on the wrist for two BURGLARIES!
No slap on the wrist this time though!!
The dead perp's mommy could blame his death on the Judge not putting her son in prison where he belonged! Of course, mommy should have done a better job raising her son in the first place!

I'm guessing that is not an official department statement. It just doesn't sound at all like where they stand.
An individual officer has his/her own view. The couple of DKPD officers I've known were both great people. (One current SWAT, the other retired detective.)

^^ When I lived in Stone Mountain my next door neighbor was a retired Dekalb County police officer. A super, down to earth guy who was representative of the majority of their force. Nonetheless, you can bet that no police department PIO would make an official on-the-record statement such as that.

The phone wouldn't actually ring. the alarm uses the phone lines to call out to the alarm company, thus eliminating the chance for the person to call out or for calls to come in. the whole process on traditional land-line based alarm systems takes about a minute to cycle. then the call comes in. about a minute into the crime. just for fun, see what you can do in your house in a minute.
