A question about Model 10's....

I've never owned a Model 10, but I've always liked their looks and reputation as being an exceptional gun for the price.
Now my question is, can you shoot medium velocity .357 like a Golden Saber at 400 ft/lbs through it or will it not even chamber/blow up the gun?
Also are they five shot or six shot?
Seems some I was looking at were six shot and others were five shot, am I hallucinating?

Thanks, I know the Model 10 is .38 special, I just know there are rare instances where a .357 will work in a .38 and just want to see if the Model 10 is such a case. But I presume not since the .357 case is longer. I don't knwo what I was thinking...drunk again...

Does anyone know if S&W are going to make airweight or alloy versions of their K frame revolvers? Taurus?

Wondernine, you can get some awfully good performance out of the 38 Special handloading for it. There are powders on the market now that were not available a few years ago that really make some speed without much pressure. The M10 is +P capable as well which takes it well into the realm of currently available 357 factory ammunition.
I would not shoot magnum ammo in a 10 even if it fit, the pressures are nearly double what that ol'38 is spec'ed out for.
EVERYONE needs a K-frame.
What I find most commonly is that when you take the magnum or the fancy flatgun from someone and hand them a M10 or similar they can control it easily, and that inspires confidence. When they shoot one for a period of time it really starts to sink in that they have 6 rounds of lower powered ammo, not 15 or 20 in a flat gun and not 6 rounds of superloudboomer that will kill with just the concussion. The realization that ammo is limited in supply and power makes placement the real key and meaningful practice more common. People will learn to shoot....

S&W Mdl 10's in all their variations is one gun S&W has down pat. They must have made a gazillion of them.
My favorite K frame .38 Special is the Mdl 15. Basically a Mdl 10 with adjustable sights.
Revolver = Shot placement X 6
Auto = Spray & Pray X many
I'm old enough to remember when the cops went from revolvers to autos.
I've been dismayed by the number of articles I have read since then that the say officer Z emptys 48 rounds from his service auto at suspect X and hit him once in the little pinky finger.
When the revolvers were in common use you never even heard much about police shootings.
It's as though there was a total attitude change by the PD's and media about the same time as the switch to the autos.
My personal opinion is that if LEO's were required to switch back to revolvers, say a .357 mag, that the number of rounds per shooting would not only drop dramaticly, but the number of shootings would reduce too.
Just my observations.

what a coincidence! i just got a model 10 on tuesday. it was a friend's dad's gun. i shot it and i fell in love. it shot tiny little groups. even with the little bitty stock s&w grips. we did a little traidin' and now it's mine. first thing i did was bolt on a set of pachemyer k frame gripper grips.
i like revolvers in the winter, you don't have to look for brass in the snow.
BTW, BluesBear, you seem to be an authority or smithy wheelguns. quick question...mine has a heavy barrel, almost a bull barrel. i remember a model 10 in the past that had a slimmer tapered barrel. was that one not a model 10,or were there barrel varients?

Both are Model 10.
First there was the "Pencil Barrel" in 2", 4", 5" & 6"
and later they added a Heavy Barrel.
IIRC only the 3" & 4" as offered in the Heavy variation.

S&W used to make an airweight K-frame, the Model 12. This was a fixed sight .38 Special available with 2" and (I think) 3" barrels. It was identical in appearance to the Model 10 ... until you pick it up. ;)

James,
The M13 was catalogued in 2" & 4".
If there were any 3" they would be a rare variant.

i shot a mod 13 with a 3" barrel. i think smith turned out a bunch for the FBI way back when. davidsons sold a few of the overruns. the 3" was perfect because you got better ejection of the .357 empty brass do th the xtra length of the ejector rod.

The Model 13 was an all (blue) steel fixed sight K-frame in .357 Magnum, with 3" and 4" barrels.

O-o-o-kay! ;) But I was talking about Model 12s. ;) I have also seen "airweight" S&W .22 revolvers, these on the J frame. I rather fancy an example of each for my accumulation, myself.

Gimme a break I've been up all night with a horrid backache. It's a miracle my old feeble brain is still working.
My BRAIN said 12, my FINGERS pressed 10 but it showed up 13.
:neener:
Happy Thanksgiving y'all.
