Are there threads that you just plain ignore?

I have gotten to the point where I just don't want to open some threads anymore. Their titles tell me everything I want to know and I am not in the least interested in seeing the same tired arguments rehashed. Examples:

- 9 vs .40 vs .45
- anything that has "SHTF" in it
- "best manstopper defensive round"
- "NRA sucks" or something to that effect

Seems to me that newer folks tend to ask questions, and of course it's often the case that for us old-timers it's "Old hat."

But, it's sorta like getting young folks interested in shooting and hunting. New faces are the lifeblood of any organization.

Heck, if seeing "the same old subject" bothers you, pity the poor school teacher! :) And, really, that's part of the deal: Often, you're playing teacher, passing on what you've already learned.

Ain't no bad thing to do...

Unfortunately, "Prayers" threads.

I'm not religious and don't pray, but it isn't like I don't wish the afflicted well.

Still, the idea of doing so for people I haven't met is too abstract for me to grasp. I don't pray or grieve for those countless thousands that die in some natural disaster halfway around the world either. I guess I'm just insensitive.

I'm NOT offended by these threads, though. To each their own, I guess.

I absouletly hate threads that use intentionally shocking headlines (or atleast they are suposed to be) Fortunatly you don't see to many of these on THR.

Example : I HAVE BOUGHT MY LAST GUN

Then you open it and it says: ...well for this year atleast.

I also tend to ignore picture threads unless of have time no high speed conectivity up here.

The threads that start to bash law enforcement. Too many were started and festered at TFL, or were a general question that turned into a free for all.
Let's not have that here. Respect each other's opinions- but if ya got nothing nice to say, take it elsewhere.

of course there are threads i ignore...lots of them. forums, too. there just isn't enough time in a day to read every thread. i respond to just a few of the ones i do read. if i have something that i feel is important to say, i'll post. if i can't add anything meaningful, or if it has already been posted, i don't respond.

i really appreciate descriptive titles. using the previously mentioned '9vs40vs45' thread as an example... i don't have a 9, or a 40. i have no intention of owning either of these in the forseeable future, and am perfectly happy w/ my current crop of handguns...therefore, i have nothing meaningful to add to the thread, and i will learn nothing that means anything to my gun ownership from reading that thread...

threads that irritate me and are therefore ignored are the ones that aren't completely titled. something like 'i just '. i ignore these on principle. if the title can't even be completed, the author is writing about something that even he can't be excited about, and therefore feels the need to trick people into reading it.

There are lots of threads that I ignore, but I can't find any kind of consistent pattern to which ones I read and which ones I skip over.

I'll generally skip over the 9mm/.40/.45 debates ... but not always. Almost never post on 'em, though.

I generally enjoy the really blood-pressure-raising ones, especially in L&P ... but not always. I like a really intense debate, but am not all that fond of thinly veiled vitriol pretending to be debate (one reason I like this group of folks -- y'all don't stoop to that level, at least not too often).

There are a few posters whose threads I skip ... but it's not usually 'personal,' just that I've learned that the threads started by them don't usually hit something that gets me interested. (Hah, fact is, if I really get irritated by someone, I'm more likely to read their threads first -- kind of the fascination a bird has for a snake or something.)

There are a few posters whose threads I almost always read ... but again, it's not usually 'personal,' just a matter of knowing who is likely to post good questions and good points.

If I see a thread keep popping back up to the top, even if the title doesn't grab me, eventually I'll give in and read it. Gotten involved in some of the most interesting discussions that way.

There are definitely some I wish I had. But moth to flame..... As a rule, I do avoid threads on certain weapons that I don't have and don't intend to have. I should avoid the controversial ones but I don't; as a matter of fact I just started two myself.

Phew, it stinks... :)

I don't think I really ignore any threads in particular, any and all information is good to know as far as I am concerned. And since I have only been shooting 1 year, I need to read as much as possible.

And even though I have a 9, 40, and 45, I don't add anything to those posts, usually someone else says to just go to ammolab.com, so I don't have to repeat it. :)

I don't specifically avoid threads. Rather, I look for ones where the subject of the thread is related to something I'm interested in, has an otherwise catchey or interesting subject, or has a lot of posts already (must be something up)........

Or........If I see that Dr Jones initiated it:)

Just kidding about Dr Jones althought I usually find his subject matter interesting. I do look to see who generated it because there are certain (and quite a few) folks on this board that I highly regard. I won't name them here because I don't want them to get a fat head about it  And, I bet you do too.

I only ignore threads that don't interest me. I like and have a lot of guns, but don't own guns of every variety. Each thread may apply only to certain personalities and type of gun interest's. I visit a lot of gun forums and am only looking to learn something with each visit. I always leave a thread when the "in" people start talking about personal stuff nobody knows anything about.

Anything with "mall ninjas" in the title.

Spiff: I've felt like I've killed threads too. The definitive, nicely written, final word on the subject? Kooties? Hell, sometimes I feel slighted when someone passes me on the expressway and I felt I was traveling at a nice manly speed and steering in a particularly lyrical sort of way. Kicking frenzy in the mind usually replenishes the spirit.

actually, come to think of it, I tend to ignore glock threads. mainly because I don't own a glock and don't seem particuarly jazzed by them. so I usually don't bother to go there. If I decide to look into one, though, I'll be all over it.

Then I open to see for myself why all this fuss...:scrutiny: :uhoh:

It depends on my mood. Sometimes I will skip anything related to the "Chevy vs Ford", Kimber vs Springfield", "9 vs 45". type threads. Sometimes I want gun info only, sometimes 2nd Amendment/political type threads strike my fancy. When threads dwindle to a two person, "oh yeah, this refutes your last post", usually will get me checking out pretty quick.

Any thread that starts with "Glock"... :neener: Actually quite truthfully, I never was fond of glocks, but this damn forum has made me more and more intrigued into the glocks. I actually even rented a Glock 23 a few days ago! :what:

Oh seriously, milsurplus rifles never really did anything for me (Mausers, SKS's, enfields, mosin's etc...). But, I said the same thing about glocks and look what happened to me. I even check GlockTalk every once in a while.

Things are changing. I'm even becoming intrigued by revolvers too, something I promised myself when I started shooting that I wouldn't spend hard earned money on a gun that doesn't quite fit me.

.... wow.... marketing whats that? All I do is read internet forums. :D

Wheelgun stuff. I dont know much about them, have never shot one, and dont have any plans on owning one soon. Why? Beats me. *shrug*

I also tend to ignore cop threads: "Cop in XYZ shoots Ð (Pi) BG's from a skyscraper on the Ides of March under a flying pig while all the planets suddenly aligned themselves during a Solar Eclipse" or something. I too ignore Glock threads, unless its something about them being ugly (lets face it, when you stoop to putting a fugly green body on something and calling it better, its FUGLY to start with.) The "Zombie" threads, unless I am REALLY bored. I peruse the Shotgun threads, but skip most stuff that isnt HD related, as I havent partaken of other uses of the shotgun and dont have an intrest currently. *shrug*

Thats all for now.

BluesBear
February 27, 2004, 08:25 AM
I usually ignore the;

Help me choose my first...

Which gun is best for...

Both of those are so subjective and there will be no lack of opinions tossed around, often with little or no regard for the actual needs and circumstances of the person asking.

After all what works best for me, after 25+ years experience, when I am doing X may very well not be the best for someone else, with little or no experience, doing Y.

I also ignore the TEOTWAWKI threads and most of the SHTF scenarios.

I really stay away from the threads that are written as to be something that actually happened only to be debunked as just another "What If" excercise. I equate those with bold-face lying.

And then there are those 5 or 6 people out of athe several thousand that I just plain can't stand and when I see them starta thread I avoid it like the plague. Yes, there are a few other people in this world who are as annoying as me.

I always ignore threads on subjects that get dredged up from over a year ago.

Oh.....but....arghh!:neener:

But seriously.....I've learned to stay out of the L&P forum entirely. Bad for the blood pressure.

And shotgun stuff. I own one that comes out of the safe twice a year for the spring and fall turkey seasons, but I really don't find them to be interesting artifacts in their own right. Maybe its the vagueness of the shot pattern. Harder to quantify your performance than with a single projectile, single hole.

TechBrute
February 27, 2004, 08:51 AM
I orginally got into guns via the L&P aspect of it. I only had 3 guns but I volunteered for the NRA and such. I now have... um... more than 3 guns because of being around like-minded people, but I avoid the L&P forums because that seems to be where my blood pressure spikes uncontrollably. I'm still active in reality, just not very active virtually.

Any of the following cause me to read no further:

1. "time to feed the hogs"
2. "Is it time yet?"
3. "________ is a traitor!"
4. "S&W Agreement"
5. Any response to a criticism of George W. Bush that takes the form of "Oh yeah? Well, Bill Clinton did something even worse!"
6. Anything to do with the XM8, lately.
7. Increasingly, anything to do with ARs and AKs.
8. What was the real cause of the Civil War?
9. "Please pray for______."
10. Anything to do with Bush's National Guard service.
11. Anything to do with Kerry's Vietnam protests.
12. Anything to do with Atlas Shrugged.
13. Anything dealing with "Which Celebrities are pro/anti?"
14. "NRA has/will sold us out!"
15. The word "sheeple." I'm so dreadfully sick of that one that the moment I run across it, I immediately disregard anything else the poster might have had to say.

15. The word "sheeple." I'm so dreadfully sick of that one that the moment I run across it, I immediately disregard anything else the poster might have had to say.Hear, hear. It's code for "why doesn't everyone think exactly like I do?"

It's right up there with my pet peeve thread title, "What the **** is wrong with everyone but me?" Which usually center around some rant about how great the poster is because he sent some useless letter to his "Congresscritter."

Also, anything using the term "Hollyweird."
