Fox News Article (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,104258,00.html)
The Devil's Right Hand' has changed for me. At the time I wrote it, I owned lots and lots of guns. And I grew up believing that was a fundamental right, and I've changed my mind about that. I think it's a right, but I think it's a privilege we abuse to the point that we may need to rethink that one; whatever we can do without dismantling the Bill of Rights and still get as many guns out of people's hands as possible.

Is this the same Steve Earle that was on some major drugs?
regardless though, there is a difference between changing your mind about a right and trying to take someone elses right. The difference is that one is your opinion, the other is the seed of tyranny.

I liked it when Kid Rock said something to the effect,

I don't know why these guys think they need to run off at the mouth.

Steve Earle is a self-described Marxist. So I have to ask: without guns, how is the proletariat going to seize the means of production and execute the landowners? ;)
I do love Copperhead Road, though. Great tune.

County/southern rock singer, guitar player. Good at it, too. His stuff is a little twangy, but I can't think of a single song I don't really like. I'm pretty clueless about his politics, but was surprised considering songs like this one:
Johnny Come Lately
(Steve Earle)
I'm an American, boys, and I've come a long way
I was born and bred in the USA
So listen up close, I've got something to say
Boys, I'm buying this round
Well it took a littlee while but we're in this fight
And we ain't going home 'til we've done what's right
We're gonna drink Camden Town dry tonight
If I have to spend my last pound
When I first got to London it was pourin' down rain
Met a Little girl in the field canteen
Painted her name on the nose of my plane
Six more missions I'm gene
Well I asked if I could stay and she said that I might
Then the warden came around yelling "turn out the lights"
Death rainin' out of the London night
We made love 'til dawn
But when Johnny Come Lately comes marching home
With a chest full of medals and a G.l. loan
They'll be waitin' at the station down in San Antone
When Johnny comes marching home
MY P-47 is a pretty good ship
And she took a round coming cross the Channel last trip
I was thinking 'bout my baby and letting her rip
Always got me through so far
Well they can ship me all over this great big world
But I'll never find nothing like my North End girl
I'm taking her home whh me one day, sir
Soon as we win this war
Now my granddaddy sang me this song
Told me about Londen when the Blitz was on
How he married Grandma and brought her back home
A hero throughout his land
Now I'm standing on a runway in San Diego
A couple Purple Hearts and I move a little slow
There's nobody here, maybe nobody knows
About a place called Vietnam

Steve Earle is a great songwriter and musically, very versatile. I have a lot of respect for his musical talent.
The Mountain and Transcendental Blues are excellent albums and I can't say enough good stuff about them.
:barf: on his self-proclaimed Maoist politics. I skipped his latest album as it seemed to political.

another drunk a-hole who's mad he doesn't have as many hits as Toby Keith.............
Give me a break.
Steve Earle stoned out of his mind on heroin has more talent than Toby Keith does stone sober. :neener:
Earle's politics may be out there somewhere to the left of Mao and he's a sad commentary on what heroin can do to a person (kind of like Jimmy Page), but at his height he had more talent than Toby Keith will ever have.
Earle's always been ambivalent about guns if The Devil's Right Hand* is anything to go by.
Try his Copperhead Road CD if you like hard edged southern rock.
Guitar Town and Exit 0 are both better country albums than anything Keith's ever done.:p
For those who believe that popularity equals talent or quality, I can counter that with one name: Michael Jackson.
*Lyrics to The Devil's Right Hand
About the time that Daddy left to fight the big war
I saw my first pistol in the general store
In the general store, when I was thirteen
Thought it was the finest thing I ever had seen
So l asked if I could have one someday when I grew up
Mama dropped a dozen eggs, she really blew up
She really blew up and I didn't understand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt
Shoot as fast as lightnin' but it loads a mite slow
Loads a mite slow and soon I found out
It can get you into trouble but it can't get you out
So then I went and bought myself a Colt 45
Called a peacemaker but I never knew why
Never knew why, I didn't understand
Cause Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand
Well I get into a card game in a company town
Caught a miner cheating I shot the dog down
Shot the dog down, watched the man fall
Never touched his holster, never had a chance to draw
The trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed
Asked me how I pleaded, not guilty I said
Not guilty I said, you've got the wrong man
Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand

Steve's grammar is as incoherent as his position on gun rights. He'd make a great poster child in the "Just say no to drugs" campaign.

November 29, 2003, 04:49 AM
Since when is grammar counted in music or poetry?
Steve Earle is a pretty good Alt Country singer. I would much rather listen to him sing than Toby Keith. But that's all I want.
His songs are appealing. They make you think and they make you feel. That's what music and poetry are supposed to do. They should be stories. Not necessarily about yourself either they can tell the tale from any point of view.
As for his political views? :barf:
In this forum it's OK to lambast his politikal views but not his livelihood.
Sing a song Steve, then shut the heck up and go away. I don't wanna hear you talk, don't ruin the mood.

John Hiatt, I totally love John Hiatt! I am a sucker for a songwriter with brains; I love Warren Zevon and John Hiatt and John Prine and yes, Steve Earle. Can't say I'm a big fan of Toby Keith; when they started playing commercials here for his concert (part of the "Shock and Awe" tour, I kid you not) the lyrics and patter were so jingoistic I thought it was a parody. If you doubt Steve Earle's talents, get yourself a copy of "Exit 0" or "Guitar Town" and see if you are still underwhelmed. I don't agree with him politically these days, but I think his recovery is admirable and his music is still terrific.
Glad to see this thread spurred such lively discussion.

Steve's best days are behind him, but he's still a good songwriter.
If you haven't listened to his older stuff, try it. It's pretty decent.
One of the best songwriters in country music is Matraca Berg.
She knows how to tell a story and has a heartbreaking voice.
If I boycotted every artist who was negative on guns, I wouldn't be buying many CD's.
Of course the only CD's I buy these days are blanks, usually right after a trip to the public library. ;)

I am listening to "Devil's Right Hand" for the first time now. Does anybody else have a hard time not singing "If you don't love me I'll kill myself" with a bad twang when they're listening to it. And "Johnny Come Lately" sounds surprisingly similar to Alabama's Lousiana Saturday Night"
I thought only Rappers sampled.
I also listen to him butcher Johnny Cash's "Don't Take Your Guns to Town"
I grew up on country and my taste lean towrds Willie and Waylon, who also have very different political views than I do, but at least they are memorable timeless performers. This guy is in the same class with Garth and Kenny Rogers. Sorry I wasted my time downloading him. I guess a boycott of him by me would just be symbolic.

IIRC, didn't Waylon record The Devil's Right Hand back in the mid-80's?
Anyway, Earle's written a bunch of stuff that's been recorded by other artists. I think his best days are behind him, though.

Steve Earl's attitudes may be twisted by the fact that he can't have guns outside the home in TX, lest he be charged with "Felon Possessing A Firearm."

Actually it was the Highwaymen but I have never heard it although I've got to believe they would have done a better job
Many country songs tell of the evils of misuse of guns this nothing new. But it seems that at least some of his songs that I heard today he demonizes the gun and not the gunner.
Let's not forget even John Wayne made what could be considered anti-gun movies with Angel and the Badman and The Shootist

Hmm... Kind of ironic, that.
Maybe the quote should have been "Since I messed up, and that part of the constitution no longer apply to me, nobody should have that right either (?)..."
I second (Fifth?) the vote for his being a talented songwriter/performer, but a complete political idiot... Just think of him the same way we (here) do most actors... pretty, talented, talking heads who are at their best when told what to say, and best ignored when off the big screen.

Wow, so few people know who Warren Zevon is, or who Steve Earle is, let alone be a fan of both. That's great. I don't know who John Hiatt or John Prine are but I'll have to find out. We seem to have similar tastes in obscure but talented artists.

John Prine is a very talented folk singer.
His best known song is Paradise.
The chorus of whuch goes;
Daddy won't you take me back to Mulenberg county,
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay.
Well I'm sorry my son but you're too late in askin',
Mr Peabody's coal train done hauled it away.
John Prine also helped Steve Goodman write "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" (The perfect C&W song)
