I had to change over, for the night, to my FM Hi-Power. What is the best way to carry it? Here is the way it is now:

Yep, you've got it right. It should be cocked and locked.

Yep, you've got it right. It should be cocked and locked.... and preferably with a round in the chamber! :D

(A full magazine also helps... :neener: )

A full magazine also helps...

Especially if you still have the magazine disconnect intact! :D

Yes, it still has the mag disconnect connected :(.

What I do (did) was load up a 13rd mag and then chambered a round, put the safety on, dropped the mag and replaced the 13th round so it is cocked and locked with 14rds total.

That is the way I would carry any SA auto.

Are we oversimplifying the issue.?

Unless one is in a military outfit which requires an empty chamber, there's no reason not to carry in condition 1. With the old-style, issue thumb safety, some liked to carry with hammer down but I never had any trouble with the safety.

The magazine disconnect is a matter of personal taste. I remove 'em on my Brownings.

It only makes sense to carry a fully loaded P35, or 1911. This stipulates good quality magazines. I could not justify trusting my life to poor quality magazines. (I except the South African surplus 17 round mags. They are so difficult to top off, I don't bother topping off with one of those.)

Please tell us any considerations I'm missing.

Best,
Johnny

I`ve read when the British SAS carried BHPs they had issues with topping off the mags so they left it alone after chambering. When I had 9mm BHPs I never bothered either. I load my .40 BHP the same way.

My Kahr MK9 & my 1911s I do top off.
