Another Dangerous Weapon Off Of The Street (heh, heh, heh)

Well, I did a little swapping today. I'm not much of a rifle guy for some reason, but I really like handguns. And, I really like revolvers. I found a S&W Model 10-5 with a 5" barrel and an early D prefix serial number from 1968. I believe it to have the original grips and has a very minimal turn line. They wanted $325 for the gun.
I, on the other hand, had a Chinese SKS that I had purchased from the same shop (my favorite in my area) last year for $235 that I had never fired and decided that I really didn't need it (I have another one in really great condition that I will probably keep). So, I went looking for a trade. I ended up giving them the SKS and $100 for the model 10 and couldn't be happier. I didn't have a model 10 for some reason, but that has been remedied.
I had a couple of people here tell me that I would be lucky if they would offer me $100 for my SKS, but I said that my LGS doesn't look to treat people unfairly and that's why I shop there. I guess I was right. No internet gun shops for me.

Very nice....
If nothing else, you can get another sks (Or AK) you dont find one of those everyday. I'm not a collector, but my guess is that you got a great deal. +1 for good local gun shops.

Beauty. I don't think I've ever seen a 5" M10. Congrats!

That's a great-looking pistol; many thanks for sharing the photo and the story. The early S&Ws really are fine revolvers; the company was in top form back then, and the quality of the 'smiths' craftsmanship clearly showed on the firearms that came out of the factory.

You stole my pistol! :(
Had one zackly like it in 1971 - gave up on finding it's birth twin & adopted it's M&P big daddy (ca. 1946) couple of months ago for $290. I really like the 5" bbl for some reason, and it just looks neat. Nothing is more fun than sending a couple hundred wadcutters down range with it, too...
Congrats!

In 1975 I had a choice between a 4" M10 and a 5" like yours. I loved the looks and feel of the 5", but went with the 4 because I was to be joining a pd. I haven't seen another 5" M10 "in person" since. I do still have the 4", and would not part with it for anything.

+1. I have a couple of nickel wheelguns, but the blued ones really get me going.

Very nice, congrats!
I have a 1967 5" 10-5. It is LNIB, no turn line, unfired other than the factory. I have yet to shoot it. It is just such a beautiful revolver I can't bring myself to muss it up.
Let us know how yours shoots! TJ

I'm usually not a fan of the big ol' logo on the side of the S&Wessons but that is one freakin elegant gun.
Do you plan on carrying it at all? I know there's no way in hell I could conceal that thing.

for some reason, the 5" barrel just seems perfect. It really improves the looks, it balances the look of the gun. To me, the 4" is a little too short, and the 6" is a little too long

No, I've got a 642 in my pocket or in a Smartcarry most of the time. My pockets are big but not that big.:D
