Heart Attack Kills Storeowner During Robbery; Teens Charged
Suspects Also Accused Of Robbing Second Store

UPDATED: 10:22 a.m. EST January 20, 2003

SOUTHVILLE, Ky. -- Three teenagers are facing homicide charges after the owner of a grocery store died during a robbery.

However, the suspects never touched the victim, according to police.

Jay Carriss, 73, died in Southville in the store he owned and ran for 25 years, Louisville TV station WLKY reported.

Police said they received a call late Saturday about a possible robbery at Carriss's Grocery Store.

Carriss and another family member went to the store immediately -- it is across the street from Carriss' home -- and found the suspects still inside.

While confronting the suspects, Carriss suffered a fatal heart attack, according to police.

When police arrived, they found one of the suspects still in the store with shotgun wounds in his leg.

"Deputies arrived and found one suspect the business owners had detained," Shelby County Sheriff Mike Armstrong said. "He was taken in."

Either Carriss or a family member reportedly fired at the suspect, who was treated and released from a local hospital, according to WLKY.

The three suspects, all 17 years old, were arrested for the robbery and for one that occurred earlier in the evening at the Country Time Market in Shelby County.

After Armstrong consulted the Shelby County prosecutor, the teens were charged also with causing Carriss' death, Armstrong said.

Carriss' Grocery Store remains closed indefinitely.

Edna Mae Pulliam, one of the store's employees, said that Carriss has had trouble with his heart.

"He just had an operation a couple of weeks ago," Pulliam said. "Since he's had his heart surgery, we were all pulling for him

The stress of the robbery took its toll, she said.

"It was probably too much cold air and excitement that caused his heart attack," Pulliam said.

Fry 'em. If our military had a penal battalion, a Legion of Death, they should be assigned to it. Just get your guns from the enemy guys, then you can shoot back.

"It was probably too much cold air and excitement that caused his heart attack," Pulliam said. Now grocery store employees are doing the Coroner's job...?

Bad scene, but while recovering from heart surgery, maybe it was a situation for the police to sort out.

Hang them. If nothing else it might show the other 17 year old thugs out there that the magic age is no longer 18 and that they may need to rethink their career choice.
