I just purchased a 7400 and after examining and cleaning the unit, I found that it will fire one time, it feeds fine, but it will not fire a second time, I removed the trigger plate, and cleaned, it it seems to work fine, and I did not see any issues, however there must be something I am missing.
Anyone run into this before, any thoughts are appreciated.
It will consistently fire, by pulling the operating lever back and loading a cartridge, however, on the second attempt to fire nothing happens, if you pull the lever all the way back and load the next round it will again fire.
Just wondering if I should return it or try to repair, thanks.
Tim

It sounds like it isn't going fully into battery on the second shot. Can you push the bolt forward a little on the second cartridge? Did you clean the gas ports and nozzle? If they are fouled up, the bolt will not go rearward all the way and the recoil spring wont have all the energy needed to feed and lock up the next cartridge. Also if it is not going back all the way, the hammer may not be cocked.

These guns have a known history of having issues of chamber rust due to useage and, at times, not cleaning. Not saying you don't clean it. Like the above poster stated it sounds like it is not going into battery fully. Which could be caused by the chamber being a bit restricted due to a fine coating of rust. Which makes sense if the full power of manually chambering a round does work. Also the gas system would be a good start too. If the bolt isn't cycling fully unencumbered than the round may not be receiving enough inertia to go into battery. I would check the brass of the fired rounds. Do they look "grainy" at all? That could very well be rust. You can take these barrels off of the receiver. I believe it is a 7/8 inch open end wrench that will do it. then take a worn 38 cal. cleaning brush and wrap the brush in some 00 steel wool and saturate with gun oil. Take the brush, screw it on a cleaning rod and chuck in a variable speed drill and "polish" the chamber ever so slightly. Dry out the chamber and repeat, until the desired result is obtained. Check the gas system, the chamber and the return spring that operates the bolt.

I saw this a couple days ago while lurking around and finally decide to join up to see if i could help here. I have a buddy I hunt with had a Rem 742 that did the exact same thing. He couldn't figure out what was wrong so he bought a new 7400. Used it for one season no problem. Second year had the exact same problem you are describing with his new rifle. Took the rifle to a friend who works at Remington who checked it over and found while cleaning the trigger mechanism or fire control as they call it he was putting something back together wrong. If my memory is correct I believe it was the little levers on the side of trigger control that reset the trigger. You might want to check it out. Good luck. I have a couple of Rem semis I could look at if you have any questions.

Take the wood off.
Drown it in Break Free.
Blot dry.
Blow it off with compressed air.
Put the wood back on.
Test it again.
