I have inherited several guns from my father-in-law. One of them is, I think, a Remington Model 25 chambered in 25 REM. It also appears to have been modified with a side mounted peep sight.

Can anyone confirm any of my assumptions, or provide me with any info about this interesting little rifle?

I have no idea but I do have a very early generation 30 remington. that is similar I have never seen the round or its ballistics. I wish I could help.

Looks more like a model 14 pump manufactured from 1913 to 1934 according to Remington's History page. You can tell by the length of the receiver. 25 Rem cartridge went obsolete many years ago, but I think handloaders can neck down 30 Rem brass to reload for it. Yes, Model 14. The Model 25 was smaller and chambered in small cartridges like 32-20 and 25-20.

WOW...what a nice old rifle, and yes....its a Model 14.

And if its true that 30 Remington brass can be necked down for it...then that means 6.8 SPC brass can also be necked down for it (sometimes its easier to find)

The 25 Remington would have about the same ballistics as the 25-35 WCF. A 117 gr soft point at about 2300 fps. If you try to handload for it be careful since some of the reloading was done for the Remington Model 30, a strong bilt action based on the 1917 Enfield. The Model 14 has a single locking lug and will handle only low pressure loads.
The spiral grooves in the tubular magazine allow the safe use of pointed bullets a considerable advantage over existing lever actions of the time.
