Here is an interesting article from the local paper. Short sweet and to the point. I'll post any follow up if they print one.

ROAN MOUNTAIN — Carter County Sheriff's Office deputies were investigating what appeared to be a home invasion that resulted in a hatchet-wielding intruder's shooting death here around midnight last night, Sheriff Chris Mathes said this morning.

"All indications are that it was self defense," Mathes said in a telephone interview.

Mathes said authorities were called to a residence in the Roan Mountain area just after midnight. A Carter County 911 dispatcher said the incident occurred on Sawdust Trail in the Roan Mountain area.

The investigation indicated that an intruder had broken into the residence and had a hatchet, Mathes said.

The home's resident fired shots and killed the intruder, the sheriff said.

Mathes said he was not releasing names just yet, but he planned to issue a news release with details later this morning. The sheriff said he intended to present the facts of the case to 1st Judicial District Attorney General Tony Clark this morning.

The investigation was continuing, Mathes said.

Try this on for size... It happened here just last week. Two robbers, armed with a gun and baseball bat get nearly chopped to pieces by the home owner armed with a machete...

Machete-wielding homeowner fights back
Two would-be robbers seriously hurt

Ken Hart The Independent

Westwood — Two would-be robbers were seriously injured Wednesday night when their intended target fought back with a machete.

The incident occurred about 11:30 p.m at a residence on Berry Street in Westwood. According to the Boyd County Sheriff’s Department, Christopher Artrip, 29, and Randall Artrip, 21, were driven to the home by a female accomplice and went inside with the intent of robbing the resident.

Both suspects were wearing masks and hoods, the sheriff’s department said. One was armed with a handgun; the other with a baseball bat.

The suspects demanded money and took the victim’s billfold. The victim, whose name wasn’t released, then armed himself with a machete and used it to fight back against the two home invaders, the sheriff’s department said.

The suspects fled the scene. Christopher Artrip was subsequently found at the Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital emergency room, along with an alleged accomplice, Amy D. Sturgill, 27, of Ashland. Randall Artrip was found at his home on Brett Street in Ashland.

The Artrips were seriously injured and transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Their conditions weren’t immediately available Thursday. The two have been charged with first-degree robbery and will be arrested as soon as they are released from the hospital, the sheriff’s department said.

Sturgill, who allegedly drove the Artrips to and from the robbery scene, was lodged in the Boyd County Detention Center, also charged with first-degree robbery and with tampering with physical evidence. She remained in custody Thursday under $50,000 bond.

Hurts to be stupid.

Many years ago, I was involved in a pig roast that wasn't going well, and I had to take a machete to decapitate a 150lb. pig, then split the carcass lengthwise, so we could grill it like two big pork chops. After I saw how easily my machete took its head off in one whack, then split it in about 4-5 whacks, I'm scared to death of them now. I'd rather shoot myself than be hacked up with one.

Bizarre. Who was it that said "don't bring a knife to a gunfight"? Or a hatchet it seems.

Sorry, it's a long stretch to call this one gun related.

Off topic.
