Having to pawn or sell your guns and other fun stuff due to massive layoffs?:(

I've had to liquidate my collection over medical issues, but that was a number of years ago....and learned a valuable lesson from that experience. If you have any guns which are special, unique or collectible, they will never be replaced and selling them should be the very last line of monetary defense against starvation.

I've since made sure I have a cushion for hard times, I don't think I could start over again with my guns and I feel for those who must.

anyway, i have thought about it but decided there were other things i could get rid of that would be easier to replace than my firearms. my dvd collection shrunk considerably, my massive stereo disappeared and a few other things too. but all my firearms stayed in my safe so i'm pretty happy.

I had to say goodbye to a Colt AR-15A2 pre-ban and a Norinco 1911A1 due to hard financial times. :(

8 years ago I had to sell off my very small collection to pay off some political trouble my wife caused in Vietnam (long story) And due to some questionable business decisions by my employer, Im beginning to sell off some lesser pieces now (Company loyalty doesn't mean what it used to)
I have a job interview in 3 hours. depending on how that goes I may be selling some more soon. Iam getting more than I paid them so far this time though

Yes, I run a small import car repair shop on the edge of an army base. The soldiers here are 82 percent deployed (to Iraq), so where I live is now a ghost town, and has been for two years. Business is bad for everyone. I have sold half of my firearms, and I see signs others are too. There is a local radio program called "swap shop" where any individual can offer for sale most any items. Think of a radio driven garage sale? There are a lot of guns being offered for sale lately, and most prices are cheaper than in the past.

MuzzelBlast is absolutly right. I've been there and done that and have the empty spots where guns used to be.
Find something else to sell if at all possible.

I had to sell some firearms a long time ago due to job loss and divorce. Lost a German Walther PPK/S, a Belgium Browning HP, and a very nice Colt MkIV Series Combat Commander that way. They were very hard to replace but eventually I did.

I am close to retirement and kinda secure so I don't foresee that happening again, but I do have a mental A and B list for what to keep and what to consider selling if I ever have to go through that exercise again.

For the most part I agree with Muzzleblast but sometimes getting through this month may be the difference of whether your house is there next month or not, or whether your wife has to go to a commie reeducation camp next month.
I am trying not to sell the irreplaceable or hard to replace items. Not that I have many in that catagory. I'm also selling the good ones to a step father that understands pride and dosn't really care about guns anyway so I will be able to buy back later

I don't buy anything that I don't think can be replaced, frees up any financial or emotional anchoring to objects, and no more that can be transported in one trip.

I sold a few things about 10 years ago. I don't miss them much but every once in awhile someone will shoot similar examples at the range and I'll kick myself....still there wasn't much choice.

Stupidly tried to save a condo from foreclosure 11 years ago by selling things - several nice guitars (replaceable), Mesa Boogie Mk IV Combo guitar amp (replaceable), Colt Series 80 Combat Commander (replaceable - in fact "replaced" by Kimber Pro Carry :D though I still want another Colt someday) and [STUPID :banghead: STUPID :banghead: STUPID :banghead: ] an HK91A1 (never replaceable in Kalifornistan unless Silveira v. Lockyer gets decided by a SCOTUS with brain cells and cojones.) :uhoh: :rolleyes:

The M1A is a great rifle and I dearly love it, but I still miss that HK dreadfully.

I'll NEVER sell another gun unless I get enough for it to replace it immediately with something better.

Things are looking Bad in my neck of the woods. The Mills are shutting down one by one. The machine shops are losing all of their business to the JAPANESE. I guess Ill be saying good bye to the new PC, Color TV, My car and my guns except one. Ive got to keep something.

I lost alot of my collection a few years ago when I quit my job and went to nursing school. Spent 2 years living on beans and spagetti, swore once I got my licence I'd never eat either of them again. Started school with 32 peices, got out of school with a .38snubby, a 22 rifle, and a 12 g SXS. But I also still had a wife who stood by me, and after 2 years of eating beans, that couldn't have been easy. Guns are great, Lord knows I spend enough time fondling, cleaning, shooting, reading and dreaming about them. But, dare I say it here, they aren't the most important thing in my life. A gun can never take the place of a good partner at your side. Of course I could be wrong, I am all hopped up on cold meds today.

I understand what you're getting at--people like me are losing our jobs to folks in India.

No offense, but I like my 'Jap' car better (I'm not sure if it's made in Canada though, my step-mom's is) and my American rifle sucked. My Italian gun is made in the US. I can't find a computer that's not made in Taiwan or Korea. It took my dad and I a while to warm up to the idea of buying Taiwanese parts.

My Filipino Camelbak is holding up well. My touted all-American range bag broke on duty--and I'm a lowly computer technician and all I do is carry it from my car to my desk.

I made a bad descion at work in October, and was fired. And then my employer apparently decided to really teach me a lesson, and got the State to disqualify me for unemployment! So I've been living on Credit Cards. Which really sucks because I just spent a decade getting them all paid off, and now I've rung a couple back up. And, I closed on my new house the day after I got fired. What bad luck!

Selling off my guns never entered my mind. I did drop cable TV though. And, since I can't get the unemployment, I did do something pretty drastic. I cashed my 401(k). It had only been running for a couple years, so I'll be able to rebuild it fairly quickly.


fortunately, I start a new job tomorrow, just in the nick of time too, cause I have $2.11 until the 401 money gets into my account...

I sold my Python to pay a repair bill on my Triumph motorcycle about 20 years ago. I still haven't found another one I can afford that is as nice as the one I sold. I sold a Carl Gustoff 7mm mag rifle with a 2X7 Leopold Vari-X III scope to buy books for college about 15 years ago. As soon as I graduated and got a job, I replaced it with a Weatherby 7mm Rem mag so I don't really miss the first rifle. I hope I never have to sell any of my guns but I will before I let my family go hungry. It's hard to beleive that just 5 years ago, everybody had a job and my 401-k was worth twice what it's worth now. :confused:

I lost a job and was about to sell a gun so I could eat when it was suggested that I go stand on the corner with the illegals for some day work. I did, and it sucked, but I didn't sell any guns and I managed to get another job a few days later.

I have like many .. had ''my moments'' and had to ''move stuff on'' .. and yeah it sux .. and it hurts. It is rare indeed that you can replace, literally ...... a piece you had to sell. The only exception I can think of is the M27-2 I found early this year .. it is all but what I once had. I am fortunate that now I can catch up again .. guess age has its up side (not all that much tho!)

Never did it because I had to but I have made a couple of judicious trades from my collection for objects of more value to avoid expenses that would have otherwise eaten up savings.

1. Preban Colt sporter for a High effeciency furnace/AC installed

2. CZ52 for a used Deere riding mower

I have 5 guns, purchased about 12 or so over the years. Don't miss a single gun I sold. You know what they say, if you're in your 20s and you're not a liberal, you're heartless :D

I've had to sell a couple over the years to pay rent. Only one I really miss is the Smith 66, but homeless guns suck worse than sold guns. I agree with Skunk - I try not to get too tangled up in the materialism and only try to get stuff I'll shoot and that can be replaced. My granddad's M1 carbine is the exception, but it still gets shot on occasion.
