If you are shooting trap, skeet or other shotgun games and are using 100 round or more a week then reloading can save you some money. Any smaller amounts the savings will be marginal and generally wouldn't be worth the trouble. For a home defense shotgun that probably will not see more than a couple hundred rounds a year at most, reloading is a waste of time and money.

When the wife and I were both shoooting trap it was certainly worth it. But unless you're going to shoot quite a bit I wouldn't bother to buy the equipment. It is kind of expensive.

I used to shoot clay pigeons about 10 or 12 times a season, and provided a fair amount of the ammo for my "only shoot occasionally friends", so it was worthwhile then -- we might go through 5-10 boxes in an afternoon.

We quit doing that about 6 or 8 years ago for no apparent reason, and I haven't bothered since. When I moved all the shotgun stuff went in a box, I am waiting for someone to give it to. It's not worth the trouble for 2 boxes a year. But its good if you shoot a lot.

Reloading rule of thumb:
Start with storebought.
Save all empty hulls and cases.
You'll know pretty soon if reloading is worthwhile by the pile you accumulate.
If it takes awhile to get big, find someone who reloads and sell it to 'em cheap, or trade it for a box of storebought.

I reload shotshells but only because I like shooting my own stuff, which is much the same reason I reload metallic cartridges.
Does it save me money? Nope.

I shoot about 15,000 cartridges a year, so it is worth it to me - I can reload for less than half what store-bought costs

home defense- You can buy shells by the 100 at some marts, cheap. These birdshot loads are great for close range work and practice. For more serious work, longer distance, #4 buckshot with a plastic buffer will give hard hitting patterns even out of a cylinder choked barrel. #4 will not penetrate as many walls as O or OO buckshot. Is it worth it? No
