Desert Eagle Question

Im 15 and i traded a few of my guns to my grandfather for a Desert Eagle .44 mag. I want to put either a BSA Red dot sight, a 2x20 mm pistol scope, or dish out the cash for a Bushnell mini Halo Sight. I will probably just target shoot, and maybe bear hunt with it but that will be only 3-4 times a year. Mostly the reason i want a sight is just to have the for self gradification that I have the most intimidating beast on the range. Please help me decide or if you have any other suggestions... feel free to speak up. Also dont think that I want the sight because I cant shoot with iron sights, I'm fully capable to drive a nail (or re-bar rather) with it as it is. :uhoh:

I am not sure if or how a scope mounts to a DE .44. Whatever you buy, make sure it's sturdy. On most autos, the scope mounts to a bracket strapped down to the frame. The bad news is, the scope can't account for the barrel/slide or slide to frame play when aiming. Not sure how accurate it will be. That's why I like to scope a wheelgun (the barrel and scope are both hooked to the frame).

I know i can mount i scope on it because the guy that my grandpa got it from had a red dot sight on it.. but i see where your coming from as far as the accuracy goes, can you narrow it down a little though?

I've got a scope on mine, but it does loosen up occaisionally.the recoil really beats them up,especially electronic type red dot units.
the de is a very accurate pistol, you should do very well with just the standard military sights.I use my scope for hunting only, and reccommend not trying a electronic model on the de.
good luck with your de,its a ton of fun to shoot.

"but i see where your coming from as far as the accuracy goes, can you narrow it down a little though?"
I was just pointing out that all auto's have play between the barrel and slide and also slide and frame. So, with respect to the frame (which is what the scope would be bolted to) the barrel is never going to be in exactly the same place on two different shots. That;s why I said I couldn't predict how good the accuracy would be.
BTW: sometimes when they test 1911's the shooters can hold tighter groups from a sandbag rest with "eyeball on iron sights" aiming than the gun shoots from a ransom rest. It's because the eyeball looking across the sights eliminates the error caused by the slide to frame slop. The sights are always the same place on the slide, and the barrel to slide play is (hopefully) not too bad. Most of the slop is usually slide to frame play. A ransom rest just holds the frame in the same place for every shot, so aiming from the sights aligns the slide correctly downrange. Aiming "from the frame" doesn't.

Dude you must be the envy of your peers.
What's your favorite movie with the Desert Eagle featured in it?
I like 'Last Action Hero' with Arnold Schwarzenegger sporting a .50AE :D

yea or that movie Predator 2 hes got that chrome one with a scope on it. as for the envy thing, I dont nessicarally broadcast that I have alot of guns to my peers, just incase it gets around school to someone that would rob me or whatnot. In 6th grade someone started a false rumor that I was going to bring a bunch of guns to school, that was after colombine, I think someone started that because prior to colombine i had brought a picture of my grandpas desert eagle (mine now) for show and tell. I think thats where i learned my lesson. only a few of my friends know including this one friend of mine; his dad owns the local gun shop where I purchase my guns, i think my secrects safe with him. I know he has some pretty exotic "coyote guns".

Yeah, I wouldn't mention or show anything related to guns in school even if its just to your friends.
Best thing to do is keep it private, since your at such a young age, you don't want any bad misconceptions to come forth...
Keep safe.

buy the ten inch barrel and put the scope on that. Better for hunting anyway. Kepp the standard sights on the 6". Or, better yet, if you can find one, get the old 14" barrel. It looks kind of silly, but makes it extremley more accurate.

For the Desert Eagle, the scope mounts directly to the barrel. There should be no concerns about loosing zero between the two unless, of course, the scope cannot handle the recoil and goes to crap. The mounted scope and barrel would come off for cleaning and/or storage in one piece.
It wasn't mentioned of the DEP (Desert Eagle Pistol) is a Mk I/VII or a Mk XIX. If it is a Mk I/VII, you will need a scope rail to attach to the dovetail on top of the barrel. If it is a Mk XIX, there will already be a Picatinny-type rail atop the barrel that you can mount the scope rings onto directly. The now defunct Action Arms use to sell a rail for the Mk I/VIIs (I have one on my Mk VII .44 mag - 14" bbl). I think Magnum Research sells them now.
There has been a question of the durability of scopes on the DEP beacuse of the recoil. I can see a $20 BEC red dot not holding up but have never tried them to see first hand myself. I have a Leupold M8 4X on the .44 mag that has worked fine for about 300 rounds.

You are very smart for your age! Kudos!
Where in CA do you live, if you don't mind me asking?
Sad how we have to treat guns as a "dirty little habit" here in CA, isn't it? :cuss:

The DE is one of the most accurate magnum pistols built. If you're going to put something on it, I would go with a scope to squeeze more of the accuracy out of it. Places like CDNN have cheaper 2X pistol scopes for less than $50 if you just want to try it out. Buy a better one later.
Dot sights are really for fast shooting, which is less what the DE is about.
And like someone else said, don't worry about the barrel/slide fit thing. The scope is mounted to the barrel, the barrel is firmly attached to the frame. This is the best setup for a scope or accurate shooting.

thanks for the advice Handy.
Drjones, I live in Redding.
I think I might just have to look into that halo sight, I not ruling out the scope or the red dot yet though. What made me weare to the halo sight more is this fourm thread (http://pub64.ezboard.com/fthedeserteaglefrm1.showMessage?topicID=986.topic)

The slide moves, along with the bolt, but the barrel and frame stay put during the firing sequence. The scope mounts directly on the barrel. Earlier Mark I Desert Eagles, like mine below, don't have the cross cuts on the slide for the Weaver-style scope rings. You'll need the intermediate scope base to fit rings. Sharp recoil will loosen up some of the cheaper scopes and mounts, that's a given.
The guns are a total kick in the pants, by the way. :D

and I tought I was doing well 'cause I own 2 guns (CZ 122 and Glock 17 3rd gen) at age 19.
BTW: how is that recoil of a .44 magnum in a desert eagle
I heard it is supposed to be a pussycat.

its pretty burly but controllable because of the wieght.. something like 4lbs unloaded. i also own a new Winchester Super X2, a new ruger MK-2 w/ SS 5-1/2" barrel, and some little german .32 sidearm that i dont know much about.
