Anyone have a gun club at their college?

We have a trap and skeet club but they're not very active and all they do is trap and skeet (duh). I'm thinking about starting a 2A club and I'm just wondering if any other schools have one and what it's like. What events do you do, did you have a hard time getting it approved by the school, does the school provide funding for ammo, classes, or range time? I have to write up a constitution and present it to the student government. I think the primary objective would be promoting gun safety followed by self defense because there are A LOT of break-ins into student housing here (Flint, MI). I'm actually amazed no one's been shot yet. Any other opinions are welcome.

fairly small catholic university, I don't think I'll waste my time even asking to create such a group...

My son is a freshman at Arizona State University, and he's mentioned they have some sort of Gun Club. I've encouraged him to join, but he's a shy kid, and so far, hasn't. I think one of the reasons he's dragging his feet is that he (and I) don't know how they would store firearms on campus (he's living in the dorm). He'd end up having to drive home for a gun, then to the club range on the South side of PHX, then back home, then back to the dorm. A lot of driving....but hey, he'd be shooting:D

At my school, if you live on campus then you can give your guns to campus security to hold in their safe, maybe they have something similar set up. He should at least go to a meeting and find out what's what.

A co-worker of mine went to a school in Montana. He said there was gun storage in the basement of the dorms. Open access, guns were in heavy cabinets secured with the student-supplied lock.

Did for undergrad. Basement of the Union. With El Tejon at the helm (i.e. reading gun rags while listening to The Pogues on tape).:D

lol chupacabra you sound like you go to the University of Maryland. It'd be awesome to have some sort of gun/shooting club here but I have a feeling the administration/SGA would never let it happen.

Actually up here in Colorado we have a couple. I am a member of the CSU Pueblo club and though we dont get to meet much we have fun when we do. The club originally started with pistol's as our focus but some members have really been pushing to go skeet shooting and get the rifles out. I think the rifle and shotgun shoots will be fun but it is way too cold outside to be out there shooting in the morning. The group is pretty big as well with maybe 4 or 5 women. I guess Colorado is just gun friendly

There's a fairly active gun club at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI.
The web address is www.sos.mtu.edu/pistol/ if you want to take a look at the site.

Actually, I am considering starting one. I need to make up some advertising and test the waters. I can see the school paper now..."Insane homocidal maniac wants gun club on campus...Police respond in force..."
Or something like that. I really dont know how it would be taken.

I'm starting a gun club at Widener University. The University has been less than receptive and even sent campus safety to search my dorm room for firearms at one point. Seems they "misunderstood" me.
I have a place picked out where we could shoot, i've got enough support among students to start the club, I just have no idea where we are going to keep the firearms. There is an ROTC armory on campus but ROTC told me that they were not interested, which is funny, because half of their cadets can't qualify at 25 yards on M16 (you only need to hit 23 out of 40 shots). They only qualify twice a year and do not practice inbetween. Looks like the army isn't as intertested in marksmanship as other branches of the armed services.

Nope. Guns are against school policy to have on campus, don'tchaknow.
The closest thing is probably the Pershing Rifles (of which I am a Corporal - Sergeant as of tomorrow ;)). Among the members of the fraternity I'd estimate offhand we have three handguns, two shotguns, and seven or eight rifles. We go out shooting semi-regularly, probably about once a month.
clubsoda22 - Our ROTC dept. is the same way. When I was in the program, I remember the fun times at the range...we got to go ONCE A YEAR. They don't even have an armory on campus, just ducks and the decommed Springfield 1903's that the Pershing Rifles use for drill.

We have a trap and skeet club, but that doesn't quite suit my interests. I have debated starting a gun club on campus, but there aren't any nearby ranges we could use, and I am only here for one more year so the effort involved just isn't worth it to me right now.

They don't even have an armory on campus
The only reason we do is because widener used to be Pennnsylvania military college.

I was on the Rifle Team in high school and college. Of course, that was quite a while ago.

Starting a gun club at a government sponsored school in today's political climate will probably be next to impossible. Private schools most likely won't be any easier. I'm surprised there hasn't been pressure to shut down the clubs already in existance.
A private social club not requiring school sanctions may be the best bet, but weapon storage will be off campus. Today's laws on firearms and schools will muddy the waters for clubs not already established.
Good luck, for I think you will need it getting your idea past the administrators.

my father in law was the coach of the pistol team at the college where he was a professor, he's now retired, and i dont know if they still have a team or not. i also know that Geo Mason Univ here in NoVa has a skeet or trap team. i have a friend in the law school there who was active in that.

New Mexico Tech would subsidize CMP matches once per month when I was a student (only 3-4 short years ago). If you showed the range master your student ID you they would hand you a Garand and a bagful of ammo, set your targets and let you shoot a match. Life was good......
