2A Walkout, Catalyst Idea

Let me start by saying this idea as it exists currently in my mind is not reasonable, my posting intent is that perhaps this may serve as a catalyst where we CAN hammer this into something reasonable.

The idea is that next time a serious federal firearms legislation is on the table the entire 2A community ceases to work until it passes. The idea came from the fact that we are many people, and in many places, a day without lawyers, doctors, engineers, auto mechanics, waiters, garbage men, truckers, accountants, and line workers would seriously impact the general populace. Also all of the firearms manufacturers and suppliers, FFL Dealers, and firearms businesses close their doors for the same day. Any multi-faceted businesses stay open but do not conduct any transactions involving firearms or related items.

The reason for this is that voting and political pressure has apparently not worked (letters, phone calls, marches in Washington), politicians do not fear us because they can run smear campaigns at election time and depend on a few big donors to fund it. The neutral public no longer cares because to them, our efforts don't matter. The anti-2A community no longer respects us because they consider us a bunch of uneducated drunkards from the deep & isolated south mixed in with drug dealers and bank robbers (cling to their guns and religion, did Mr. Obama say?). At this point it seems that no one cares.

This idea is to remind the politicians and the people standing on the sidelines we are many, we are educated, we are not criminals, and mostly that we are vital to their survival. The reason for shuttering businesses is that there will be tons of lost production and revenue, politicians are going to see Dollar Signs in their eyes when they realize the taxes that are lost from the cease of sales even for a day.

As I stated at the beginning, this is a fantasy idea and needs work... So how COULD we make it work?

I think the first step is obviously what you're trying to do here... Hammer out a solid idea. I like the basic premise, and the idea is sound, I think the main issues would be getting the word out to enough people in enough places (exposure, advertising, etc) and explaining to people in such a way that they don't simply see it as a day of lost wages/profits, but as an investment in their future.

I actually like this idea. An 'Atlas Shrugged Firearms Day' if you will. I'll dwell on it for a little while and see what I can come up with. :D

How about instead of going to work everyone show up at their county courthouse or better yet their state reps local office?

dbb1776, your idea is very good. It takes the idea of the walkout in a direction where it is then known WHY we are walking out.

One of the reason I had this thought is that simply not showing up to work (or an equivalent) is something everyone can do; you don't need a phone, a post office, the internet, electricity, running water, or a ride to Washington D.C. in order to participate.

What dbb1776 has suggested is good because
-it keeps the idea local and therefore highly accessible.
-it makes it known what our purpose is.

Sounds like a great idea. People protest for all sorts of other things and the amount of people involved attracts international attention.

I'm not sure how staying home over personal politics is going to go over with employers. Given that, this seems like a non-starter.

This reminds me of a movie. See if you can guess it:

We cook your meals, we haul your trash, we connect your calls, we drive your ambulances. We guard you while you sleep. Do not [screw] with us.

I like the idea.

I like the general concept of effectively identifying firearms owners as cornerstones of modern society, normal people worthy of trust.

However, I really DON'T like the impression it gives employers. Basically, they'll look it as disregard for responsibility unless you can actually schedule the day off as vacation in advance.

The most important thing we can do as firearms owners is defeat the terrifying caricature that antis try to paint of the average gun owner. This idea does that well, so I commend you for that.

We are less than 2% of the population at best, and most people already think we are crazy. I don't think this would have a positive impact. I'll bet a lot of us don't even vote or contact our legislators on key issues. If we brought an anti or a neutral person shooting, that might have a better impact.

Easy. Fight Club. One of the best books I've ever read which ruined what I thought was one of the best movies I had ever seen. Awesome book, though.

Admission: The quote was taken from the movie. I did not credit it because the result of the movie is what would be interpreted today as an act of terrorism (whether or not the buildings were empty matters not).

This has been a good discussion.

Thinking out of the box.
I like it.

Not a lot of people can stop working in today's economy. Lots of us are on the edge of employment already.
Maybe there's another way...
