This isn't the first time I've heard of this. Dunno if it was true or not,but apparently, it was/is in vogue for HIV activists to be HIV+ and some were actively seeking the disease so they would not feel like hypocrits or so they could be more empathatic, or some such nonsense.

I hope it's a lie. Not only are they throwing their own lives away, they're damaging the entire struggle to control and eliminate this disease.

If true, and hopefully this gets it back ON topic, I think that it's an expansion of the culture of the victim that has arisen over the past few decades... It's more noble (and socially rewarded) to be a victim than to be a responsible non-victim. We've got folks who vehemently claim that they couldn't defend themselves, etc. - that isn't all that far from this...
