I have not bought a new gun since I discovered Gunbroker and how easy it was.

If I see a gun that tickles my fancy and have the budget to buy it, I do. Doesn't matter if it's new or used.

I agree with Sport45.

I have had mixed results buying used. I only buy used if they don't make it anymore, I prefer NIB.

Update:
If I was law enforcement I guess I would have two new guns

I exclusively look for and buy only used guns. Most of them are still under warranty anymore for one thing and they are cheaper enough for me to justify buying them used over new.

I think I have enough know how to not buy a piece o' junk.

Really though nothing new strikes my fancy. If I wanted a Glock for instance (yeah friggin right) I would look for a used one for 400 bucks rather than even consider one for 529.

But I am not going to buy a plastic fantastic. Pre lock Smith, 1911, BHP, HK P7 to name afew.

I buy them all. It depends on what strikes my fancy at what time and how much cash I have in my wallet.

I buy used mostly. Every once in awhile I will get a new one but just on occasion. I usually just know what i'm looking for and see if i can find it used. It is usually cheaper and then the goverment does not have a record of you owning that gun.

I buy both. I prefer new but I can't always get what I want, whether due to availability or price.

With the exception of an accurate target rifle, I'd always try for used. Even if I have to go new, like the last gun (Marlin 1894) because there aren't any suitable use guns at an acceptable price, I'll almost always use gunbroker or gunsamerica.

I find many gun shops full of arrogant clerks and owners. Not all, but too many.

About half my guns I bought new, and the other half I bought used. I do try to stay away from buying used auto's.

I buy new ones if I like the concept of them.
Used ones for character and collecting, though.

The only two 'newer' Guns I own, were fourty-odd years old when I got them.

There are some guns that you really don't have a legitimate option to buy new. Those, I always buy used. :D

Other guns, sometimes I buy new, sometimes used.

Roughly half the guns I've purchased have been new. Ironically, of those, more new guns than used ones have been lemons.

I suppose I mostly buy used, but I'll buy a new one from time to time.

Either way, I've never gotten a bad one.

I still buy "new". It is kinda hard to buy a Remington Model 37 or Winchester M52 new. So it is a mix.

Mostly new for me, but I've bought a few used and will do it again if I like what I see with the right price.

Most guns never get used very much unless they are owned by avid shooters. Used guns are generally a good, somitimes great, buy. If I can pick one up used for the right price I can generally sell it for what I have into it, sometimes more.:D

I typically buy new guns (sounds like I have lots of guns, but I don't).

I have, on occasion, traded a used gun for another used gun.
Each time, I knew the person who had owned the gun(s). Every gun I received was basically new, or had been shot just enough to be considered "broken-in."

CPO Sigs are some of the best deals going right now.

BTW your post is screwed up. Title refers to "new" but poll refers to "used".

I've never bought a used one yet, although I thought about it when I decided to get the Hi-Point carbine (endless warrantee).

Half and half. I only buy guns locally. I can't bring myself to buy a gun without being able to check it out in person - new or used. I've used Gunbroker, but only for guns within about a 100 mile radius of where I am.

My current favorites are all old and bought used.

Never bought a used gun. Seriously doubt I ever will.

For me, it's like with cars: I have to know everything that was ever done with it. I can trust my firearms because I know exactly how they were fired and maintained.

I was reading a post by a guy who claimed to have had a revolver failure. Turns out on inquiry that it wasn't his gun. That it had been issued to him, and that he was totally unable to answer any question at all regarding how many rounds the gun had fired, when it was last serviced, etc. He didn't know.

To me, his report is meaningless. If you don't know everything about your weapon, then you're putting a lot of trust out there on your life-saving equipment. It'd be different if I were a collector or something, but my weapons are solely for defense and I need them to be as reliable as possible.

I enjoy the used guns more than most newer ones. It's mostly steel and wood for me although with a few exceptions. No Glocks, No way.

I try not to buy ANY guns after a few gins, did it once and figure the gunshop owner must have seen me coming. :)

Still got that lemon.

Of all the fireams I own, a little less than 40% are used. All my carry weapons are new, but I am having 2 used 1911's rebuilt at the Springfield Custom Shop. THose will be new guns when they are finished.

(And that covers the last 50 years.)

I have not bought a new gun since I discovered Gunbroker and how easy it was. by O.P.

Well............. they do sell new guns on GunBroker.com as well. And it's just as "easy".

I used to be against buying used rifles who's main use was to be for accurate shooting because you never really know how many shots have really been shot though it. After going against my better judgement once or twice, I found that 2 of the "slightly used" rifles were 2 of the most accurate rifles that I own. Now, I'm much more willing to take a chance on a used rifle as long as it's in "LNIB" or "excellent" condition. I still stay clear of of "normal dings and gouges on stock & barrel and the scope is smashed but otherwise it's in great shape. It only fell down the cliff to the rocks below once............... or maybe twice."

About half of my guns are used and all of those are C&R guns.

It depends on what the gun is, and what the price is, and how badly I want it, and whether I can get a LNIB version of the same piece for less money. I have bought new guns, to be sure -- but I've bought plenty more old ones.

I buy about one new gun a year from Cabela's using the "Cabela's Bucks" from my VISA card plus the $100 coupon Cabela's mails out once or twice a year. Sometimes the gun ends up being FREE. :D Sometimes I have to pitch in a hundred or two to buy something nice.

In addition to that, I buy used guns whenever I find something I like and I can afford it (usually several times a year)

I voted, they still make new guns? Although that isn't exactly true. :uhoh:

I seem to remember buying two or three new ones during the last 10 years, and they did prove to be O.K., but I much prefer the better quality, workmanship and prices of used guns. Of course I pick and choose, and so far have been able to detect any flawed ones before reaching for my money.

I also enjoy buying ones I know have problems for considerably discounted prices, and then bringing them back to first-class working condition. That said, I occasionally find excellent buys on used, but not hardly guns, that only suffer from a little finish wear. A slightly used model is just nicely broken in at someone else's expense and trouble.

I prefer to buy NIB, but at the same time. There is sometimes a certain comfort (whether real or imagined) in knowing that nobody has really had a chance to screw the gun up too bad if it's factory new. At the same time though, I am not opposed to used guns. Some of the best guns I've shot were well used when I acquired them.

A lot of the comfort from NIB has to do with little annoyances like careless dings to a gun's finish. I have some dings on a stainless gun I bought as used, and I just kinda look at some of them and go "wow, how careless did the owner have to be to get this one?" I'd rather be the only person to ding up my guns. =-D

However, if I end up selling a gun I bought NIB, I am guarenteed basically guarenteed a significant loss if the gun is still being manufactured. I just ate a loss on a revolver I bought NIB on a whim a few months ago. Bitter lessons, I guess.

I pretty much buy everything via gunbroker or other internet dealer. New, used, ammo, accessories, it matters not, although the percentage of guns I have is more bought new than used.

I have two reasons for buying used guns.
1) The ones I buy cost less than new ones
2) I get a real kick out of shooting a gun 50+ years old, especially if its pre-WWII.

I prefer to put my own wear on guns. There are some I'd like to have that could only be had used, and that's fine, but in general I prefer new.

Guncollector1982
June 28, 2010, 02:39 AM
i prefer used and older becuase there values lowered making them more affordable and at a certain point the value will rise again. A new gun if sold a week or day or year later youd lose money like car driven off the lot but a used one will appreciate in price paid once its depreciated out. I do buy a new one now and then and usually i regret it after i do. Some though like my ARs i have had no regrets but even they have appreciated in value since obamas been president :)
