Im compiling a list of "less expensive" but quality 9mm Compacts, suitable for carry. Im not in the immediate market for any of these but wanted to run it by the board...so to speak!
Keep it at least the same quality level....these are good guns just not common or well known......

So far.....

RAP 401 9mm :D
Arcus 94 s/a /98 d/a C's :D
Daewoo DP51C :D
Feg Prz9 :scrutiny:

What else is there? Chime in....and the High end guys...Ive got em...this is just a question....:neener:

Shoot well:evil:

I am truly not trying to be smart with you, but does 9x18 count as 9mm for you or just 9mm para?

The reason I ask is the Makarov seems to fit the bill of dirt cheap, yet very reliable.

What about the STAR pistols? I don't have personal experience but have heard mostly good things.

A nice used Walther P99 is excellent and can be had in the $400 dollar area.

From what I gather, the following are considered decent to good compact 9mms (I haven't shot any of them, so this is based reputation alone)

Astra A-70 and A-75 (these are ancestors of the RAP 401)
Star Firestar, Ultrastar, BM
FM detective
HS2000 (gotta buy used)
Steyr M9/S9

And I think there is a Bersa compact 9mm that might be good (assuming it's from the bersa side, and not the llama side).

The Bersa Mini 9 is sold in the US as a Mini Firestorm. Do a google search and you can find the Argetinian Bersa website.

The Mini Firestorm has the Bersa marks on the right (ejection) port side. It seems like a nice little pistol.

Here is my down and dirty 9mm list...

Kel tec p11
FEG PJK9HP
Star (Firestar? Ultrastar?)
Astra A100
Steyr M9
Tuarus pt111, pt92
Witness (OK, a cz clone)
Baby eagle (another cz clone)
Ruger p89, p95, p94, p85
FM HP (argentine)
Fn fortynine
S&W sigma
Firestorm (non 1911 model)
Bersa Thunder 9

All can be found new or used for under $400, some well under.

I believe I would carry any of these after the appropriate practice/test rounds have gone through them.

I compiled this list from www.Gunbroker.com

Here's the URL for Bersa's web site(Argentina):

http://www.bersa-sa.com.ar/

It's a bit of a tease, as quite a bit(read most) of their product line isn't imported here. There aren't many Thnuder 9's floating around, but they aren't bad at all. Does anyone know if other manufacturers mags work in the Thunder 9/Mini-thunder 9 series?

I will only name the ones I have owned.

Star Firestar M43. The gun is made as well as most guns costing 2-3 times as much. If you can find a nice used one, they can be very good guns for the money.

FEG PJK (or something) It was the DA version, very nice.

Ruger P95: I got a SS one for just over $200 and it is decently accurate and Ruger reliable.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Ruger.

I would be all over a $400 or less p99, if not just for horse trading value if I did not like it for some reason. (I have yet to shoot one):)

The Rugers have always seems like excelent values to me. I have always meant to try one or two out, but keep forgetting to for some reason or another. I need to get my hands on one and try it out.

Seems like people missed the "compact" part of your request. Someone did mention the Baby Eagle (or Uzi Eagle) which does come in a fairly chopped down version. CDNN has them for $279.

$279 meets the criteria....the eagle is a great little gun.
9x18 gets sidestepped this time...parabellum please.

I guess it depends on how one defines "compact". The P95 is often though of as "large" but its dimensions compare extremely favorably to a PCR, a CZ75 Compact, and actually a host of other "compact" pistols. It is thicker through the slide and frame than many so perhaps a bit less comfortable, however in the very important category of grip thickness it is far thinner than any CZ, a BHP, etc. Ruger's double-stack polymer grip frame is actually pretty darn slim. It is a bit longish in the butt, but most of the length is in the front of the grip where it really doesn't matter. Grip length in the rear is, again, pretty short, comparing favorably with many pistols considered "compact". Now, I ain't trying to make an argument for the P95 as a pocket pistol, just saying that many "compacts" are not that small. And the P95 is not that big. Put it side by side with a lot of pistols and see. BTW, I love CZs and BHPs, not bashing them at all. Oh, and the Ruger is lighter than most, too, especially lighter than the Baby Eagle or the steel-framed CZ compact and pretty comparable to the PCR. It's not as graceful, but even Clydesdales are beautiful in their own way. :)
