Tried Shockey's Gold in my Hawken and it sucked. Good luck. It lacks power, but it just wasn't accurate at all. It works best with Pyrodex RS. Might just be the gun, though.

I've been using the APP fffg which is basically the same powder from the same company and it works good enough in my Pietta 1858 Remington .44.
I do load an extra 5 grains of powder for a total of 35 grains and it produces plenty enough power and velocity to suit me.
Just quickly replace the cap on the powder container and try to use whatever amount that you pour into your flask. I pre-measured the loads into pill bottles. They didn't absorb any moisture from the air and every one of them worked fine.
But I will only buy the fffg granulation because the ffg is coarse and chunky.

Thanks for the input, at $32.67 a pound (Canadian) it had better work. Will the finer powder settle to the bottom of the jar and be useless because it is too fine?

That's not a factor at all. It's not that fragile of a
product and doesn't break up into dust like particles.
If it does ever clump up at all just shake the container
several times and the clump should break right up.
I do like to firmly compress the powder in the revolver
chamber before loading a ball over it.

with Jim Shockeys Gold/American Pioneer, you NEED to seat the projectile hard until you feel it compress. This powder was designed for tight fitted sabots and if its not a tight fit, you'll have to up the bullet weight to get it to shoot accurate in a rifle. Your pistol though, i'd just suggest to get the powder compacted into the cylinder when you seat the ball.

What Frontier Gander said. All of the powders made by APP (APP, JSG, and Goex Pinnacle) require a tight fitting sabot seated very hard on the powder. When you feel the powder compress you've got it right. My best 50 yard, 100yard and 150 yard groups have been fired using JSG and Pinnacle powders. My longest kills on deer and hogs have also been made using JSG and Pinnacle powders.

Well, I always shack the ball down pretty hard, didn't feel for compression or anything, though. I shot a 240 sabot (hornady) and it didn't like that or my 385 great plains. Perhaps I didn't have enough compression. It's a wood ramrod and I don't wanna get too forceful with it. I'll just stick with pyrodex in that gun. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I shoot 2" 100 yard groups with Pyrodex and the 249 sabot, 4" with the great plains. That'll gitter dun to 100 yards and ain't shabby for iron sights.

I'm going to try, eventually, the Shockey's Gold in my new CVA Wolf inline, but I really would rather shoot 777 if it shoots well with that. The Hawken didn't worrk too well with 777, either. It seems to be a might picky for powder for some reason. I get it on paper with 777, but it ain't what I'd call a group. 777 doesn't need much compression, indeed works better without much compression is what I'm told. I'm hoping this CVA will be a little less choosy about powders. It's 1:28 twist, the Hawken Hunter Carbine is 1:24. Not sure what that'll do for it. I've got to do a job this morning in the next county, but I think I'll have time when i get home for a range trip. :D I just picked that Wolf up yesterday and am itching to burn some charcoal in it....or 777, whatever that's made of.

I had to buy a pound of Shockey's Gold FFg because no one had anything else. I bought some Goex Pinnacle FFFg soon after. With our humidity, both powders clump. Shockey's Gold looks like miniature slag, not uniform at all. It goes boom, but that's about it.

I just bought a pound of the loose FFg ($24). <NOT sticks> After seeing some of the blog stuff in Cabela's site, I'm worried I screwed up! Sure hope it works. Haven't decided on a bullet or brand of 209 primer yet. Anyone have actual experience with this stuff? I'm going to be using a TC Triumph...

for a rifle, you'll settle around 80-90gr JSG 2f and want AT LEAST a 300gr projectile.

My CVA Accura @ 100 yards with 90gr JSG 2F and a 338gr Powerbelt platinum,

Is American Pioneer Powder kin to any of those? I can't remember....

The reason I'm asking is because my sister gave me 5 pounds of American Pioneer 3fff back when I was in Alabama. I'vd had it going on 5 or 6 years. I have never opened up any of it and have never shot any of it in my whole life. Maybe every month when I'm close to it I will pick the containers up and shake them real good. The powder seem's to be loose and holding well as opposed to some BlackMag3 I had laying around for a few years....

I just recently purchased a Pietta 1858 with 5 1/2" barrel from Cabelas, My first BP gun! after lurking on this site for a while. The salesman a Cabelas recommended the Jim Shockey's FFFG Gold for it due to price and ease of clean up. I loaded it with 25 gr. and .451 RB over a dry lube pad which i compressed over the powder before loading the ball. At 10 yards the balls would penetrate the 1/2" plywood we had the target on and seat themselves in the 2X4 we had supporting the plywood. My 13 yr old daughter was a better shot with it than I was! She's pretty good with a .22 rifle as well. here are pics of her first target and our new toy!

GOTC, on the side of the JSG jug I got it says manufactured by APP. I hadn't read much about it on THR but the Cabelas salesman had said he'ld shot it and was happy with it.
