Given the option would you buy a like new xdm 9mm stainless for 525 or a new black finish xdm 45 for 629? I cast and reload 45 acp and have a ton of data and experience reloading the cartridge. The 9mm I have some good jacketed and fmj loads but the cost is nearly double to load. I need to figure out a good cast 9mm load but thats another story. So what should I do, I want something that is easier for the wife to handle (current nightstand pistol is an FNP-45) but I won't keep a gun that I don't shoot regularly.

I have an XDm 9, it's a good gun. That being said, if you already reload for 45ACP, then you will make up the price difference very quickly, instead of having to get 9mm reloading gear. As far as the wife shooting it goes, I've always thought that 9mm recoil is much more snappy than 45 recoil. The 45 will probably be easier for her to handle, because it's just a soft push back at you. Plus, the XDm 45 with the small backstrap installed will probably fit your wife very well. I have chick sized hands, so what fits me is usually about right for the average woman. It should be much more managable for her than the FNP-45.

If you have the gear to reload the 45, stick with it. Kick wise, I always thought the 9mm and 45acp had a very similar and comparable amount of kick. I doubt your wife, or anyone should have an issue shooting an XD-45. Main hurdle is overcoming that mental idea that a 45 kicks hard, because it doesn't!

If you're reloading you can adjust the recoil... correct? .45

I'd get the .45. I already own an XDm 9.

If it is going to be a shooter, I would get the 9. If you want it for defense, I would go with the 45.

Last month I won a XDm 3.8 9mm. After 700 trouble free rds., I really like this gun. For the past 7 years I have carried, competed with and shot .45 caliber 1911's exclusively. I have also built one that has cycled through more than 13,000 trouble free rds. However, now that I have this XDm, I decided to give it a go. I could not be happier. Easy to shoot, reliable, more than combat accurate, easy to maintain, and it hold 20 rds. As much as I have disliked the Glock's I have shot and the SIG's I have owned, that's how much I really like this little gem.

More rounds? Faster hits?

^ I agree with the more rounds thing, but faster hits???
personally I dont beleive the .45 does that much better than the 9mm as far as damaging a target, so I'd go for the higher round count so it will be more fun at the range.
