The price is about $5,000 too high...

I would not buy a pistol like this off the net unless the buyer was willing to have funds held in escrow pending sale etc. I would also like to see documentation as to its provenance, etc.

I hope this gun finds a good home. Not THAT good a home though.

I wouldn't buy any thing I hadn't had a look at a picture of.

My procedure for far-away guns is to have the seller take it to an FFL in their area who verifies it is what it is and is ready to ship. I send the check to the FFL, he ships the gun to my FFL and gives the check to the seller. Costs a bit more, but peace of mind is priceless.

By blue book value, a 95% Singer is only $18,500. Let's see a pic!

If your 1911 collection is missing a Singer does price really matter? If you can afford $18,000 I'll bet you can also afford $33,000.

It is a Singer and a reputable seller. They only made 500 of them and probably less than 100 exist. They pretty much get whatever the asking price is or a negotiated version of said price.

Plus, when buying an 62 year old gun the asking price of which is over $10,000, a $500 round trip airfare isn't really out of the question. :D

How do you know he is a reputable seller?

The seller is familiar to several fellow 1911 collectors that I know, having actually shown this particular Singer off at a recent Colt collector's show. $33K may be very steep (even for a Singer), but sometimes that's the price you pay for having one advertised to you, rather than having to beat the bushes for one yourself. He probably is very negotiable on the price as well, and simply wants to keep the tire-kickers away. Submitting photos will only serve to create a firestorm of discussion on the Internet forums, and tons of unnecessary e-mails to the seller as well.

For top-dollar collectibles such as this, the procedure is always the same. You actually pick up the phone and call the guy, establish a base of communication, then arrange a way to see the gun in person. After that you then negotiate heavily on the actual price once you prove that you're actually interested.

Anybody who'd send $33K through the mail based on pics they saw on the Internet (no matter how good) would be a fool anyway, and he knows it.
